Oh rejoice, oh Earth, rejoice for the Good Lord was bom. Oh, the first guest is the bright Sun And the second is the bright Moon And the third guest is the fine Rain. Oh rejoice, oh Earth, rejoice for the Good Lord was bom. The Sun says: "No one can rise above me. Oh, when I rise on Sunday morning All the people rejoice The old and young." Oh rejoice, oh Earth, rejoice for the Good Lord was bom. And the Moon says: "No one can rise above me. Oh, when I rise late at night The traveler on the road rejoices. Oh, the traveler and the oxen pulling his cart." Oh rejoice, oh Earth, rejoice for the Good Lord was bom. And the fine Rain says: "No one can rise above me. For the past two winters Yara’s director Virlana Tkacz has traveled to a village deep in the mountains and recorded ancient pre-Christian winter solstice rituals and songs. Yara’s new piece, Koliada: Winter Songs, is an original theatre piece based on winter rituals in the Carpathian Mountains and will feature Ukrainian actors Oleh Drach and Mykola Shkaraban, as well as traditional musicians from the Carpathians and Yara actors. The show will be de signed by Watoku Ueno. The koliadas, as they are remembered in the Carpathians, are sung incantations that as sume the magical powers of voiced words. They are some of the best-preserved examples of oral literature, hun dreds and perhaps thousands of years old.
