true democracy in Ukraine will once again use their thugs to force and frighten people to vote for the Russian pup pet. We are concerned that there may not be as many observers and that the anti-democratic forces will be better prepared. Reinforcements from Putin’s camp will once again do their best to violate human rights and the dignity of the Ukrainian people. We cannot allow this. Today we are in solidarity with the duly elected president of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko. As we stand here near the United Nations, we ask the democratic states of the world to support Ukraine at this critical time. It is now or never! We would like to remind President Bush that it was President Ronald Reagan, who helped cause the fall of the evil empire. Today we ask President Bush to support Ukraine and not allow Russia to build another wall and another evil empire. The Ukrainian Diaspora throughout the world supports the desire of the Ukrainian people to be ruled by a president elected by the people. They want and deserve their basic human rights and their dignity. Unfortunately, in many parts of Ukraine, the electoral committee violated basic voting rights. Thugs forced people to vote for the Russian puppet Yanukovych by threats and by falsifying the election results. The fraud was so pervasive that some members of the election committee have tendered their resignations in disgust. We demand that the rest of the elec tion committee be dissolved and that those guilty of treason against the Ukrainian nation be punished. Long live the newly and legitimately elected president of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko! Long live free and democratic Ukraine! God blesses Ukraine! God Bless America! In a recent interview conducted by New York Public Radio, I commented about the elections in Ukraine; I was also asked to comment on elections by the Associated Press. As UNWLA president, I have asked the presi dents of Regional Councils of the UNWLA to write letters, call, fax, or e-mail our elected officials and ask them to support Ukraine. Many of you have already done so and have received answers. We also wrote letters to newspa pers. On December 3, 2004, the New York Post published a letter I wrote in response to an article by Ralph Peters, which appeared on the newspaper's PostOpinion page on November 24, 2004. The text of the letter follows: On behalf of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, the largest and the oldest Ukrainian women’s organization in America, established in New York City in 1925, I would like to express my heartiest thanks for Mr. Peters' column. He was perhaps the first American journalist in memory to present the history of Ukraine and the facts surrounding the 2004 election, which was stolen from the Ukrainian people, exactly as things happened. Thank you for enlightening American readers about the horrible things that are occurring in the country of my birth. —Iryna Kurowyckyj, President, Ukrainian National Women’s League of America In November we commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Great Famine in Ukraine with a moleben in St. Patrick Cathedral in New York City. There were many speeches presented after the service. One of the most interesting and moving speeches was delivered by Rabbi David H. Lincoln of the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City. With Rabbi Lincoln's permission, I am proud to share the text of his speech with our readers. Speech of David H. Lincoln, Senior Rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue delivered during the commemoration of the 71st anniversary of the Great Famine It is vital that we remember the millions of lives lost in the great famine that desolated Ukraine in 1932— 1933. The malevolent Soviets denied the existence though the evidence was overwhelming. The Manchester Guardian, which certainly cannot be considered an anti-Soviet organ, in a leading article on December 27, 1937, referring to the famine said, "For a long time, the Russian dictatorship was able to conceal from the eyes of the world what was incomparably the biggest economic calamity that had afflicted Europe for more than a decade." Some idea of the extent of the calamity may be gained from the evidence of Mr. W. H. Chamberlin, for many years the Moscow Correspondent of the Christian Science Monitor. Writing in that paper on May 29, 1934, he said, "It would seem highly probable that in 1932-1933, between 4,000,000 and 5,000,000 people over and above the normal mortality rate lost their lives from hunger and related causes." 10 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2004 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
