WCU recognition and certifi cates were presented to Anna Krawczuk, Maria Chymy- nets, Teodozia Sawycka, Sofia Andrushkiw, Vera Mvcio and Luba Bilowchtchuk. It was the first time in the history o f the World Congress o f Ukrainians that an organization was distinguished in this manner. In 2001, on the 10th Anniversary o f the Independence o f Ukraine, certificates o f gratitude were awarded to Luba Bilowchtchuk and M. Orysia Jacus in Kyiv, Ukraine. L o o k i n g b a c k From the very beginning o f its history, the UNWLA has understood the importance o f education. In the early years o f the organization, scholarships were awarded only to UNWLA members. UNWLA Branch 28 o f Newark, New Jersey became instrumental in assisting students in Ukraine, and Maria Rusenko o f Lviv received a scholarship in 1932. After World War II and the enslavement o f Ukraine under the Soviet regime, UNWLA attention turned to Ukrainian students in Poland. The political and economic situation in Poland was such that their efforts had to be secretive; they were generally known as “Scholarships to Europe”. In 1961, the UNWLA's New Jersey Regional Council established the first Memorial Scholarship Fund, honoring its first president, Olena Hordynska. The purpose was to award scholarships to female students o f Ukrainian studies. The first bequest for scholarships was left by Eva Stashkiw, a member o f UNWLA Branch 17 in Miami, Florida. It was in 1967 that we learned about Ukrainians in Brazil, their efforts in education and Brazil. Olga Korczagin, Luba Bilowchtchuk, Bishop Jeremias Ferens, and M. Orysia Jacus.
