The explosion of the reactor at the Chomobyl nuclear plant allowed the world to glimpse the madness of a political regime more interested in saving face than in saving lives. For those readers who may be interested in reviewing Chomobyl related material published in previous issues o f Our Life, we are pleased to provide a brief index. For poems, see Camilla Huk’s “Mourning Bells” and Natalie Mason Gawdiak’s “Mr. Gorbachev Speaks” (both April 1996) or Gina M. Tabasso’s “For Chomobyl” (April 1998). For a report on medical concerns, please see “Report on Children of Ukraine” by Dr. Zoreslava Nizhnik (April 1996). “The Midwife,” a harrowing short story by Anya Savage (April 1998) is a fictionalized account of pregnancy touched by the evil of environmental pollution, while Martha T. Pelensky’s Eco Newsletter (April 2000) provides documented evidence that authorities were aware of the nuclear plant’s structural flaws long before the catastrophe occurred. “Seeds of Hope” by Chrystia Sonevytsky (April 1997) is a gentle story of the efforts to reclaim environmental integrity through a tree-planting program. UNWLA president (1) Iryna Kurowyckyj and Irena Chaban editor o f "Our Life” present a check to a New York City firefighter.
