OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LIX APRIL 2002 Editor: TA M A RA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT April is a beautiful month, a month when nature’s multicolored beauty is evident in every garden, every park, and every forest. It is for all o f us a time to celebrate the splendor o f spring. And yet, for Ukrainians around the world, it is also a time to mourn those who died following the catastrophe at the Chomobyl nuclear plant and to express our deep sorrow for those who continue to suffer from the long term effects o f this disaster. It is our solemn duty to remind the world what Soviet policy and M oscow’s negligence has done to damage Ukraine’s environment and Ukraine’s people. In March, Ukrainians heard sad news that brought back memories o f horrible political repression and injustice. We received news from Ukraine that Iryna Senyk, a dissident who served a 35-year prison term imposed by the Soviet government, was severely beaten in her home. A member o f the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, Ms. Senyk endured years o f hardship at the hands a regime determined to keep Ukraine enslaved. The former political prisoner lived to see a democratic independent Ukraine. Today, it seems she must again live in fear for her life. It is believed that the assault on Ms. Senyk may have been politically motivated. The UNWLA has written a letter to the Lviv Oblasna Prokuratura demanding that they find the perpetrators and punish them. There have been some important changes at UNWLA Headquarters. In this issue o f Our Life I would like to inform you that we have officially moved to 203 Second Ave. While it will take many months to set up our office and attend to all o f the details that will ensure smooth operations, we are happy that we are finally “at home” in our own building. On behalf o f the UNWLA National Board and Regional Council o f New York I would like to express my special thanks to Dr. Bohdan Kekish, President o f Selfreliance (NY) Federal Credit Union, and to Myroslaw Shmigel, President of the Board o f Directors o f Selfreliance, and to all o f the members o f the board for providing office space in their building to the UNWLA for such low rent for so many years. We bid them goodbye and wish them well in renovating the premises for their own use. We are proud of their accomplishments and know that they will continue to grow and prosper. Construction on the new building o f the Ukrainian Museum has begun. As we watch the foundation being laid, we wish the Museum board and members well in all their endeavors. We will, o f course, continue to support the Ukrainian Museum as we have done in the past. During a recent meeting, we shared a pleasant moment with Museum Director Maria Shust and Marta Bachynsky, who welcomed us with beautiful spring flowers. It will be a pleasure to continue working with them and observing the growth and progress of an institution, which serves such an important function in our community. From March 4 through March 15, 2000, the 46th session of the Commission on the Status o f Women was held at the United Nations. The theme of the session was ’’Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century and eradicating poverty including the empowerment of women thought their life cycle in a globalizing world” Attending the opening o f this important session as special guests o f the World Federation of Ukrainian W omen’s Organizations were the Permanent Representative o f Ukraine to the United Nations, His Excellency Valeriy Kuchynsky, and his wife Alla. Representatives to the United Nations from WFUWO were Nadia Shmigel, Slava Rubel, and Iryna Kurowyckyj. We were pleased to include in our delegation a special guest from Ukraine, the President of Soyuz Ukrainok Lvivska Oblast Branches, Zoriana Bilyk .
