The wine and cheese social continued with a lively discussion on "The Ukrainian Woman as Guardian of Her Heritage". The final and inspirational remarks of the discussion were offered by Valentyna Sazonova, Director of the School of Fashion in Kherson, Ukraine. Ms. Sazonova, who happened to be in the New York area on busi ness, came to the social with Ludmila Lantsuta-Davies, a new Branch 30 member. She expressed her amazement that Ukrainian women in America assembled together, spoke in Ukrainian, and were interested in preserving their own culture. She was inspired by our gathering and said she was eager to join the Ukrainian Women's League in Ukraine. She congratulated those present on their work and pointed out that were it not for Ukrainian women in the diaspora, some of Ukrainian culture might have been lost. Ms. Sazonova encouraged the non-member guests to join the UNWLA and to continue the good works of this worthwhile organization. The evening ended with coffee and dessert and the hope that branch membership will increase in the new ACUPUNCTURE AN OLD NEW FORM OF MEDICAL THERAPY by IHOR MAGUN, M.D. The Chinese thought that vital life energy flows through a series of pathways or meridians. They postulated that there were twelve of these pathways on each side of the body, coursing deep in the body and occasionally surfacing. In the areas where they sur faced, the energy flow was disrupted. The goal was to restore normal energy flow, thereby establishing a per fect equilibrium throughout the body. Inserting a nee dle into certain body points restored the energy flow, broke down blocks, or drained excessive pressure. This healing therapy, acupuncture, has been used for over three thousand years. Acupuncture is relatively new in western cul ture, but more and more physicians in the west are learning about acupuncture and are using it as a treat ment option for their patients. It is primarily used for pain management, but is also being used in other divi sions of medicine: cardiology, neurology and orthope dics. Many patients suffering from chronic problems or those who are sensitive to medication side-effects are turning to acupuncture as an alternative to tradi tional treatment. In our society, acupuncture is performed in much the same way as it has been in China for the last three millennia. Alcohol is used to clean very specific points on the body and sterile needles are used to puncture those areas. There is usually a slight discom fort at the time of insertion. The needles stay in place for five to twenty minutes. The number of insertion points and the number of required treatments depend on the condition being treated. The fundamental mechanism underlying the efficacy of acupuncture is not really understood. Some scientists speculate that naturally produced mor phinelike substances - endorphins and enkephalines - may be released within the brain in response to acu puncture. Some evidence suggests that acupuncture stimulates an increase in blood circulation and this may be the underlying therapeutic mechanism. Acupuncture seems to be a promising tool, but more research is really needed to confirm and de fine safe use of this exciting treatment modality. As with most treatments, success is variable, even in the most properly trained hands. Any individual interested in treatment by acupuncture is advised to deal only with licensed professionals who are proficient in the procedure. 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2000 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
