UNWLA BRANCH 30 OF YONKERS HOSTS NEW MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL by NADIA LITEPLO, Branch President Branch 30 members and guests (left to right) Nadia Cwiach, Irena Hlyshevsky, Nadia Liteplo, Iryna Hoshovskyj, Oksana Porodko, Roma Wasylciw, Olga Rudyk, Ludmila Lantsuta-Davies, Christine Sapka, Lesia Kmetyk, Marta Burachok, Valentyna Sazonova, Lida Mitsyk. To acquaint young Ukrainian women in the Westchester, New York area with the Ukrainian National Women's League of America and to encourage new membership, Branch 30 of Yonkers New York hosted a wine and cheese social. Nine women responded to our invitation and met with current branch members on October 27, 1999 at the home of branch president Nadia Liteplo. During the event, Nadia Cwiach, former branch president and former national UNWLA financial secre tary, presented a short history of the organization, its goals as stated in the bylaws, and an overview of its humani tarian works. We then focused on the activities of Branch 30. Since its inception thirteen years ago, Branch 30 continues to staff and administer a weekly Ukrainian svitlychka in Yonkers. In addition to Sunday bake sales, the branch holds courses in gerdany making, displays pyanky to non-Ukrainian communities in Westchester, sponsors numerous art exhibits, and holds an annual Christmas bazaar. The ladies enjoy getting together, planning and working together in a friendly and energetic at mosphere, and have become a wonderful "support group" for each other. Guests were also told about our interesting and fun-filled monthly meetings, during which we plan future projects, learn about our culture (pre-Christian beliefs and how they have influence our literature, modem Ukrain ian wedding rituals, the meaning of the paporot flower, e.g.), and occasionally watch films (In the Shadows of the Forgotten Ancestors , Naymychka, and Lisova Pisnia, to name a few). In addition, we enjoy exchanging recipes for inclusion in our expanding branch cookbook and sharing humorous anecdotes and jokes from the Internet or of fice. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2000 15
