ing Consul General of Ukraine in New York, to discuss cooperation between the UNWLA and Ukraine. On February 25, 2000, Iryna Kurowyckyj, Irena Steckiv (Member-at-Large of the Executive Committee), Jaroslawa Rubel (UNWLA Press Chair), and Irena Chaban (Editor-in-Chief of Our Life) visited the Ukrainian National Association for a meeting with UNA President Ulana Diachuk. Ms. Diachuk was presented with the UNWLA's latest publication: Milena Rudnytska: Essays, Let ters, Documents , edited by the UNWLA's own Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak. We also met with Raisa Haleshko and Roma Hadzewycz, editors of Svoboda and The Ukrainian Weekly respectively, and informed both editors that the UNWLA is embarking on the celebration of the 75th anniver sary of its founding. Both editors agreed to pub lish news about the Regional Councils' 75th anni versary celebrations in their newspapers. The arti cles will appear with the 75th anniversary logo. At the end of the year 2000 each newspaper will fea ture a centerfold dedicated to important events in the history of the UNWLA. On February 27, 2000, the New York Regional Council held is Annual Meeting to elect a new slate. Nadia Savchuk was elected New York Re gional Council President and we wish her well in her new position. Iryna Kurowyckyj represented the Executive Committee at the meeting. The UNWLA Executive Committee sent greetings to Ivan Pliushch, President of the Verk hovna Rada and to the Honorable Konstantyn Hryshchenko, Ukraine's newly appointed Ambas sador to the United States of America. TABASSO To those who stepped into the nuclear bell protecting us with their bodies from the unpredictable, to those who helped kill Communism in a land of wild mushrooms and berries to those buried in lead coffins protecting the earth from contaminated corpses under the shadow of a concrete and steel sixteen-story sarcophagus that was to last for centuries, to those with medical conditions who are blamed with "psychological problems among an ignorant and misinformed population", to those living on the edge of the exclusion zone breathing radioactive wildfire, to those who thought they were leaving for a short trip only packed enough for a few days and have never been allowed to return, to those who suffer and who will suffer the children with swollen thyroids a country of enrgy shortage and daily brownouts, to those who cannot afford meat, milk and postage stamps, to the land and the Dnipro that are so radioactive they cannot give us beats, wheat or water.
