Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LVII APRIL 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Soon, once again, we will be commemorating another anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear accident — the sorrow and tragedy of the Ukrainian Nation. The Soviet government responsible for the nuclear accident may no longer exist, but the legacy of the worst nuclear disaster the world has seen, will be remembered by all generations to come. We bow our heads in prayer for the victims of Chornobyl, the deceased and those who are suffering the aftereffects of the disaster to this day. At its Triennial Meeting held in London on April 28, 1986, The Interna tional Council of Women was the first non-governmental organization to pass a resolution on the Chornobyl nu clear disaster. Members of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, an affiliated organization of the NCW/USA, were delegates at the meeting and were instrumental in putting the resolution to a vote through Lillian Boykens, the ICW representative from Belgium. The month of April also brings joy for it is also the month of Easter which we celebrate in a special way. Greetings and best wishes to all members of the UNWLA, patrons and supporters of our work, and readers of Our Life The Executive Committee and the National Board of the UNWLA salute the North New York Regional Council on its celebration of the UNWLA's 75th anniversary. Every Branch and Council celebrating the anniver sary of the founding of our organization will be celebrating and recognizing the special components that make our organization strong, powerful and popular. All women in the Ukrainian American community should want to be a part of the UNWLA, and the anniversary celebrations Regions and Councils have planned with the objective of displaying and promoting our programs and activities will help our organization grow and last for many years. As you read this issue of Our Life, the children in Kharkiv School #3 and Lviv School #21 will be eating their milk and bulochky for breakfast. We wish to thank you for your generous contributions which have made this program, part of the UNWLA's 75th birthday celebration, possible.
