WINTER LETTER FROM KYIV MARTHA BOHACHEVSKY CHOMIAK As I write this, on January 14, Ukraine is cele brating the New Year. It is less than the major cele bration on Christmas, but neverthless important. Not only is the feast day of St. Basil, but the time when little boys sprinkle wheat in your home to insure a good harvest. The little boy with the wheat must be the first to step over your threshold this morning, othervise your grain yield will be poor. The final traid of the holy days wil come in a few days —Epiphany on the Jordan. The polluted waters of the Dnipro River will be solemny biassed by the clergy of the three competing Orthodox churches and by the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church, who say the Vatican II mass in a variety of local spoken languages, including English, have already had their Epiphany. This aws the season for Liturgical music, espe cially choral emsembles. All are continuing to expe- riance a renaissance. The first icy part of winter has passed. The days a bit longer, and every once in a while, the sun peers out. This season, Kyivan ladies are especially partial to long fur coat over fashiona ble minis or midis. They are, as always, elegant and the make-up is now very discreet. Even the colors of the fur coats are fashinably muted. Lancome, Gucci, Versace, Dolee and Gabbarti are readily available for a hefty sum. People have not been receiving their wages some for as long as half a year at a time. Many are feeling the pinch, harder to bear now that one can readily see all the things, including dis hwashers, that where unheard of in Soviet times. The intelligentsia is especially hard hit, unaccustomed to fending for jobs, or grants. But the new stores are flourishing and more wealth is openly evident, including private schools -- lycee, gymnazium, ko- ledzh, boarding school. Newspapers are running articles explaining restaurant behavior and the rights of customers. Real Frozen vegetables are available, and in the bazaars, the little ladies selll a creditable local blue cheese. The homeless are not very much in evedence. Starngely, they have not discovered the good Wash ington tradition of sleeping over grates. They do rummage through the garbage, collecting bottles and cartons. Naturally, they did not do so under the Soviet for two reasons. One, the police patrolled vagrants, real and political and two, pickings in the garbage were so slim that there was nothing to be had from the Kyivan now possess along with shrink- wrapped white bread. My seminar at Kyiv Mohyla Academy is on the history of women, or women and history. The first two session were fine, we will see how it all deve- lopes. There are young men in the class, and that I understand is an innovation, as is the course itself. I continue traipsing around the country with seminar presentation for faculty and administrators who say nice things about them. What with all the interrup tions, writing is going slowly. Despite al the natural disesters, economic crises, unsolved political issues and endless talk about what to do about them, the country seems to be moving in the right directions. On this happy note, let me wish you as pleasant a February as possible!
