UNWLA BRANCH 36 IN CHICAGO CELEBRATES 65TH ANNIVERSARY Even though the Chicago weather was cold and windy, more than 100 people gathered on Sunday, October 12, 1997, at Little Kiev Restaurant to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Branch 36. Branch treasurer Stefania Krywaczuk Mroz, who was emcee of the event, welcomed the guests and called on the Reverend Walter Rybicky, pastor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Church in Palos Park, Illinois, to give the blessing. There was a moment of silence in memory of our deceased members. Six year old Alexandria Mroz recited a short prayer she had learned in SUM camp this summer. A delicious meal was prepared by Mrs. Mary Rodak and Ms. Nancy Rodak, members of Branch 36 and owners of the restaurant. After the meal, Mrs. Mroz introduced Mrs. Olha Trytyak, the National First Vice-President of the UNWLA. Mrs. Trytyak presented the branch with a certificate of gratitude for many years of service to the UNWLA. Other speakers at the event included Mrs. Luboslawa Shandra, past president of the Chicago Regional Council, and Mrs. Maria Dorozynsky, second vice-president of the Chicago Regional Council. All of the speakers gave tribute to Branch 36's long an dedicated service to Soyuz Ukrainok, to the Ukrainian people, and to the Ukrainian nation. Branch secretary Lydia Malanchuk Macewich presented the history of Branch 36 in Ukrainian. She spoke of the fourteen women, who under the leadership of Mrs. Anna Brudny, organized the first UNWLA branch in Chicago in 1932, commenting on the difficulties of maintaining such an organization during the Great Depression and describing how members of Branch 36 had participated in the 1932 Chicago World's Fair. Mrs. Macewich also chronicled more recent acti vities in the 65 year history of the branch, citing how they had marched in support of women’s causes, to commemorate Captive Nations Week, and for the release of political prisoners from Soviet prisons. She described how Branch 36 collected and donated mo ney, food and clothing for Ukrainians in Poland, Yugoslavia, South America and Ukraine, adding that branch members also contribute to the local church, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Ukrainian museums in Chicago and New York and periodically host pysanky workshops and exhibits for the American community. Ms. Luba Nowak, the current president of Branch 36, gave a short history of the branch in English, complete with a slide presentation. Everyone enjoyed the slides of past and present members participating in the group's various activities. A special tribute was given to Mrs. Helen Brelinska Krull, the first secretary of Branch 36, who was honored for her 65 years of service to the branch and the UNWLA. Musical entertainment for the event was provided by ten year old Natalka Jerzewski, who entertained Branch members and guests by singing and playing the bandura, and by Ms. Lesia Klymchenko, who sang three beautiful Ukrainian songs. At the end of the program, Mrs. Mroz thanked all who were in attendance and all who had helped make the banquet a success, citing in particular Mrs. Rodak, Ms. Rodak, Mr. and Mrs. Melinyshyn, Mrs. Sandy Semkiw and Ms. Oksana Melnyk.
