NEW BOOKS A REVIEW BY MARTHA BOHACHEVSKY CHOMIAK UNWLA VICE PRESIDENT FOR CULTURE A number of new books that should be of interest to us and can serve as excellent additions to local public and school library holdings have recently been published. A sampling of current fiction from Ukraine, bearing the title From Three Worlds: New Ukrainian Writing, includes short stories, bi-lingual poems, reproductions of current art and a number of photographs from Ukraine by American photographer Tania D'Avignon. Solomea Pavlychko, a literary scholar, introduces the collection. The book was edited by Ed Hogan in collaboration with Askold Melnychuk (the author of What is Told), Michael Naydan (professor of literature at Pennsylvania State University and a noted translator), Mykola Riabchuk and Oksana Zabuzhko, both writers from Ukraine. Those who have not been following contemporary Ukrainian literature are in for a surprise -- here is a book your teenagers may savor. The publisher is Zephyr Press, 13 Robinson Street, Somerville, MA 02145. Paperback and hard cover editions are available. George Luckyj, Professor Emeritus of Toronto University, well known for his brilliant studies of various aspects of Ukrainian Literature, has written an extremely readable fictionalized biography of Taras Shevchenko. Entitled Shevchenko’s Unforgotten Journey, the 119 page book is based on a thorough study of the poet's life and work and serves as ap excellent introduction to Shevchenko for those who know little about the man who is both the bard and symbol of Ukraine. For those who grew up on Shevchenko, this work will unveil new layers of his brilliance. The publisher of this work is Canadian Scholars Press, 180 Bloor Street West, Ste. 402, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2V6. George Luckyj and Ralph Lindheim have edited a comprehensive anthology of readings on Ukrainian historical and cultural affairs. Towards an Intellectual Hustory of Ukraine, numbering 420 pages, provides the reader with expert translations of representative documents on broad cultural issues. It deals with the modern period of Ukraine, beginning with the mid eighteenth century Orlyk's Bendery Constitution and ending with Mykola Riabchuk's brief but provocative article "Ukraine Without Ukrainians." This anthology, which will greatly aid in classroom teaching of the history of Ukraine, should be read by all who are interested in our past, and Luckyj's introduction will convince the reader that she should be interested. The book was published by the University of Toronto Press in association with the Shevchenko Scientific Society. The American office of U of T Press is at 250 Sonwil Drive, Buffalo, NY 14225. A more controversial publication is Andrew Wilson's Ukrainian Nationalism in the 1990’s: A Minority Faith published by the University of Cambridge Press, 49 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011-4211. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the most recent history of Ukraine, and while one may disagree with its premise - and many will - it provides a useful and thorough presentation and analysis of recent developments in Ukraine. Last, but certainly not least of the latest publications on Ukrainian topics in English is the magisterial Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Soviet State (1939-1950) by Bohdan Bociurkiw of Carleton University. This book, the culmination of over three decades of work by the author, also draws on recently opened archives and will define the field for some years. It was published by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E8, Canada. A discussion on any one of these publications would be an interesting addition to a UNWLA meeting - English or Ukrainian.
