THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED ECOLOGY COMMITTEE by Martha Jarosewich Chairperson, UNWLA Ecology Committee As the chairperson for the newly established Ecology Committee I welcome the opportunity and challenge, to both define the goals of the Committee and undertake the tasks set out to achieve these goals. I have accepted this exciting challenge because I believe there are extraordinary opportunities for the UNWLA to work in the community and internationally on issues pertaining to the environment and public health. As a well-established non-governmental organization (NGO) the UNWLA has the institutional history, the knowledge and the skills which will be critical in helping develop the Committee’s mandate. The organization’s strength as a women’s NGO will be an invaluable asset in assisting and educating our communities, and the children, women and elderly in Ukraine on environmental and public health issues. As the goals of the Ecology Committee are defined, it will be important to uphold the vision of the UNWLA and take this opportunity to enhance the organization's profile in the local and international community through continued civic and educational activities. The deterioration of the quality of the global environment has had a noticeable impact on the quality of the natural resources as well as on public health in our communities. Environmental quality has a direct relationship to public health concerns. International assessments show that the impact of environmental pollution on health is one of a series of competing determinants on public health and well being. Therefore a primary objective of the Ecology Committee’s mandate would be to integrate the UNWLA's skills and institutional abilities to improve the quality of the environment in our back yards and have the vision for improving the quality of environment in the international arena. The Ecology Committee is in its infancy and the interests of the members and committee activities have not yet been defined. The first two years will be crucial in establishing a strong foundation to work from; however, by the third year I hope to begin implementing some specific activities. Proposed tasks to achieve the primary objective would include (i) evaluating local issues pertaining to the environment and public health in the community, (ii) evaluating Corporate and private sector involvement and support available in the community and internationally, (iii) identifying the state and local policies of the community, (iv) evaluating environmental education programs and activities in local community and schools, (v) conducting public information forums locally and abroad, and (vi) working closely with other organizations in the community to build on mutual strengths and skills. I envision that the Ecology Committee would consist of UNWLA members who are specialists in the field or have an interest in the environment and public health issues. Developing the mandate will require an AT THE NATIONAL HOME by DZVINIA ORLOWSKY By 36, I'd outlived Mozart. My life had accumulated its own Weltschmertz: divorce, an early prognosis of blindness, (hysteria, Mother said, runs in the family) all brought to the piano, prominent and open like a coffin. We were promised one genius per family: In dreams, my hand turns the page to the one song I know: Venetian Boat Song. Raising and pressing the foot pedal, the water laps, the gondolier dips his oar. But fingers know their limitations. At the Ukrainian National Home, ankle-socked and with a tight braid coiled to my head, I lost the rhapsody Liszt might have felt; I sat numb before the backdrop of Carpathian Woods. By the time I finished playing, Father had excused himself, his empty seat raised. A large fan blew the scent of children waiting next in line to shame their parents, then take a bow. "At the National Home" is reprinted from Dzvinia Orlowsky: A Handful of Bees by permission of Carnegie Mellon University Press © 1994 by Dzvinia Orlowsky. The poem was previously published in AGNI. understanding of the interests of the organization and an evaluation of where the organization’s activities can most benefit the community and Ukraine. To assist me in defining this mandate I have prepared a survey which will be sent to all UNWLA members. With the responses from this survey I hope to form a strong committee, define a mandate, and prepare a program of activities. As part of this article, I have included a draft of the survey and would welcome your comments and recommendations. In addition, in the coming year, a series of Branch seminars will be scheduled as an information giving and gathering exercise to inform and better define the goals of our effort.
