Vllth CONGRESS OF WORLD FEDERATION OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS TO BE HELD IN TORONTO, CANADA IN OCTOBER Since November 1948, the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) has united Ukrainian women’s organizations in the Western dias pora into one voice one forum, regardless of their politi cal or religious affiliations. This united voice was the defender of women in Ukraine during the time when Ukraine was enslaved and part of the USSR. WFUWO’s affiliation and cooperation with the World Movement of Mothers (MMM), the International Council of Women, the International Alliance of Women, and as NGO in Consultative Status (Category II) with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations has provided Ukrainian women with a forum in the international arena. Since Ukraine became independent in 1991, WFUWO has worked to give ongoing support to all phases of the rebuilding of a free and democratic Ukraine and has upheld the principles of political and religious toler ance, recognizing and representing universal human rights. In order to uphold Ukrainian ethnic identity and cul tural heritage, WFUWO promotes cultural and educa tional programs of literature, history and fine arts, including Marusia Beck literary contests. Since 1963, WFUWO has published “Ukrainka V Sviti”, a quarterly magazine with one issue a year, “Ukrainian Woman in the World”, published in English. The organization has published numerous books on Ukrainian culture, the latest being “Ukrainian Museums, Galleries & Collections in the Western Diaspora” (1996 compiled by Iryna Russnak). WFUWO has 21 member organizations from 13 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Great Britain, Poland, Switzerland, USA, Venezuela, and West Germany. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. was an initiator and founding member of WFUWO and has remained an active participant. Membership in WFUWO gives Ukrainian women a joint opportunity to have their statements, recommenda tions and resolutions presented before the United Nations, the Ukrainian World Congress, the International Council of Women and other organizations. Annual meetings of WFUWO are held in October, providing an opportunity for women from member organizations to meet and report about activities in their respective countries. The agenda for this year’s Con gress includes the election of new leadership for a five year term. Previous WFUWO presidents were Olena Kysilewska (1948-1956), Olena Zalizniak (1956-1969), Olena Lotockyj (1977-1982), Maria Kwitkowsky (1982- 1992). Oksana B. Sokolyk has been President of WFUWO since 1992. Cover of "Ukrainian Museums, Galleries & Collections in the Western Diaspora”. Cover of "Ukrainian Woman in the World".
