"TEN YEARS OF POETRY PROM THE YARA THEATRE WORKSHOPS AT HARVARD" On Sunday, November 23, 1997, Yara Arts Group hosted an evening of wine, poetry and music to celebrate the recent publication of "Ten Years of Poetry from the Yara Theatre Workshops at Harvard", an exquisite hand-made volume of contemporary Ukrainian poetry in award winning translations by Virlana Tkacz and Wanda Phipps. The event, held at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York City, was well attended and featured bilingual poetry performances by Yara actors and theatre workshops alumni. Over the last 10 years, with the help of designer Watoku Ueno and dramaturg/translator Wanda Phipps, Yara Arts Group director Virlana Tkacz has introduced participants of the Harvard Theatre Workshops to scores of Ukrainian poets and dramatists, those traditionally recognized as classic figures of Ukrainian literature (T. Shev chenko, L. Ukrainka, M. Kulish), those who have more recently been recognized and critically acclaimed (M. Riabchuk, P. Tychyna, et al) and those who are only now beginning to be noticed and valued for their contributions to contemporary Ukrainian literature. "Ten Years of Poetry from the Yara Theatre Workshops at Harvard" is a tribute in translation to these poets. The volume also commemorates a decade of successful projects which comprise the history of Theatre Workshops at Harvard. The first two work shops "Jimmie Higgins" (1988) and "Fragments in Performance" featured the work of Les Kurbas. "On Word, Thru Word, Forward!" (1990) focused on poetry as performance and celebrated the works of Ukrainian poets of the 1920's. "Radio Eternity" (1991) focused on Ukrainian poets of the 1920's and the 1990's while "Heart Pic(k)s" (1992) featured 19th and 20th century Ukrainian love poetry. Con temporary avant-garde Ukrainian poetry was the highlight of "Body Parts" (1993), "Language of Space: Attics, Kitchens and Poems" (1994) and "Oceanic Consciousness: Growing Fangs, Tails and Wings" (1995). "Spinning Spells" (1996) introduced the poetry of Ukrainian women. The most recent workshop was "Seven Veils" (1997), featuring the works of seven contemporary Ukrainian poets. Begun by Virlana Tkacz in 1988, the Yara Theatre Workshops were the springboard for WHEN FIRST STARS APPEAR by DZVINIA ORLOWSKY My sister ties her apron, tests The boiled cabbage with her fork, waits for each large leaf to pull away. Mother sits at the table guarding the candle lit for the dead. This is not her country. Every Epiphany she reminds us how she lost everything. The Bandurist Choir struggles to be heard - the stereo needle dragging its wad of dust... This year, who will praise their voices, their dead gifts? She tells us the same fable of how at midnight barn animals speak ... My embroidered shirt irritates my neck. Did you feed them? Give them water? Did you cause them pain? I listen each time knowing it is never the animals that complain. "When First Stars Appear" is reprinted from Dzvinia Orlowsky: A Handful of Bees by permission of Carnegie Mellon University Press © 1994 by Dzvinia Orlowsky. creating the Yara Arts Group whose trademark multi-lingual performances based on Ukrainian literature are well known to the Ukrainian-American community. Ms. Tkacz's articles on her successful and highly acclaimed theatre productions, here and in Ukraine, have appeared in previous issues of Our Life.
