WORLD FEDERATION OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS STATEMENT TO THE FOURTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN BEIJING, SEPTEMBER 1995 At the 38th Session of the Commission on the Sta tus of Women Meeting at the United Nations in N.Y., the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations presented a statement expressing our deep concerns regarding nuclear safety in Eastern and Central Europe. We raised this issue again at the ЕСЕ regional Pre paratory Meeting in Vienna, October 1994, calling for countries of technical and financial means to have a moral and practical obligation to help the countries in transition to secure nuclear safety for the entire region. The Chornobyl disaster has shown the great threat to human existence from peaceful use of nuclear energy where design, operation, and maintenance were not on par with world standards. Sadly, the countries that ope rate these nuclear facilities are burdened with reactors which they cannot afford to shut down or even modify because alternative means of energy are either too costly or not available. The world, especially Europe can suffer unthinkable consequences if a similar disaster of the same or even greater magnitude should occur.
