WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR TEEN IS USING DRUGS First, you must understand the four levels of drug use: experimentation, controlled use, abuse and dependence — and then react accordingly. EXPERIMENTATION. If your child is just starting to try drugs, the worst thing you could do is accuse him of being a “drug fiend.” Overreaction can actually make the child use drugs more — in rebellion. Instead, be subtle. Quietly tell him you feel he may be getting into something dangerous. Don’t accuse or lecture. Ask why he wants to try drugs to interfere with his health and his goals in life. CONTROLLED USE refers to the occasional drug user. In this case, the person does not allow the drug to con trol him, or interfere with his work. Again, in this situa tion, it is best to approach your child gently with your concern, without overreacting. ABUSE. People cross the line from controlled use to abuse when they start using drugs frequently and excessively. If you’re convinced your child is an abuser, tell him you love him and you want to help him with his problem. If he doesn’t stop, convince him to go to a counselor with you. DEPENDENCE occurs when the drug controls the per son. In this case, the user is self-destructive and you must act decisively and forcefully. Carry your child to a treatment center if necessary.
