If you say “ I am Ukrainian” or “ I come from a Ukrainian background” the sum total of what was, is, or will be Ukrainian belongs to you — as well as the responsibility for it. Because the Ukrainian Museum holds, protects, pre serves and exhibits all that is best within the scope of the Ukrainian cumulative cultural achievements, the American community as well as the countless individu als from foreign countries visiting New York City have the opportunity to become acquainted with us and to see our contribution to world civilization. Shouldn’t our beautiful embroideries, kilims, ceramics and works of our master painters and sculptors be shown in an envir onment which will dignify their value, beauty and time- lesness? The present Ukrainian Museum’s facility is modest, to say the least. Yet even within its small galleries the exponents speak grandly and visitors are awed! Imagine large, spacious galleries showing magnificent examples of Ukrainian folk art! Our pride would be boundless! However, pride is hollow without some contribution to its attainment and sustaintment. Ukrainians and Americans of Ukrainians heritage, if we stand up to be counted, remember, that our actions today become our legacy for tomorrow! The Ukrainian Museum needs a new building. The need is urgent! The greater Ukrainian community must assume the major portion of funding for this project. Whatever other sources there are — Federal agencies, State agencies, private coporate funding — they must see a major community initiative before they will make a judgement on their contributions. It is up to us, all Ukrainians and Americans of Ukrainian descent, to join in this initiative. Make no mistake, it will be our collec tive glory when we ahieve our goal. Let our thoughts only dwell on the positive and on success!
