traditional presentation of the keys to the City. Former United States Congressman Clem McSpaddden delivered a moving patriotic message entitled “ If our flag could talk.” The keynote address was presented by the Norw- eign actress Liv Ullman. She holds the post of UNICEF Good Will Ambassador since 1980 and has devoted much of her time on behalf of this organization. She spoke about the abused, neglected and troubled child ren of our world and urged those present to become familiar with the United Nation’s convention of the Rights of Children, which is ready to be adopted in the Fall of 1989. The convention stresses the civil and economic rights of children, their right to protection from expoita- tion and the right to special care for the handicapped. A special videotape message from James Brady, former White House Press Secretary was shown to the Convention delegates. Mr. Brady was seriously injured in the attempted asassination of former President Ronald Regan. Currently, Mr. Brady is Vice Chairman of the National Organization on Disability. He said, “Volunteer women are busy women who make this planet a better place. I am involved not only because I happen to be a member of the disabled, but because I have faith in our country and its organizations such as the GFWC.” The International meeting/luncheon was attended by all delegates the following day. Representatives from eleven countries paraded into the Plaza Ballroom dressed in their colorful native dress. This year the reports from the internationals were gathered and presented in a slide show format by Jane Lee Norsal, Chairman of the International Clubs. During this reception GFWC Okla homa President Mary Crew presented each international delegate with a feather and a certificate, making her an honorary Oklahoma Indian. Every morning and in the late afternoons through the duration of the Convention, workshops were held. One topic under hot discussion that was of concern to all the International delegates was how the reports of each organization should be presented. Some argued that the chairman should read all the reports, others said that the delegates traveled great distances to reach the Convention and should be allowed to read their own reports. This subject was especially important since this year’s reports as shown on the slide presentation, did not always coincide with the actual written reports. The Ukrainian Museum has a visitor’s book in which people who come to the Museum write a few words of their impression of their visit to the institution. Some people write in English, some in Ukrainian. The Ukrain ian comments have been translated and are so indicated. “It may be a small museum, but its contents are cer tainly worth seeing. I agree with the guidebook, “an often overlooked treasure!" * * * ‘‘I truly enjoyed my first time visit!" Fr. 1. Iryna Kurowycky, Maria Savchak, President of UNWLA, Dr. Maria Kwitkowsky, President of WFUWO, Natalia Ivaniv, Pre sident of UGC. Some delegates were unhappy about this situation and all the recommendations were forwarded to the Execu tive Board. On Thursday at the plenary session, associate members had a chance to greet the Convention and give a two minute report on the work of their organiza tion. Dr. Kwitkovsky spoke on behalf of WFUWO. Mrs. Maria Savchak, President of UNWLA reported on the work of UNWLA, as did Mrs. Natalia Ivaniv on behalf of the Gold Cross. She also presented a “pysanka” Ukrain ian Easter egg to the International President, Alice Donahue. During the Convention UNWLA distributed pam phlets on the history of our organization and about the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Since the next conven tion will be held in New York City, we invited delegates to visit our Museum. It is in New York City that the GFWC will celebrate its centennial. We are all looking forward to this big event. * * * ‘‘Heartfelt thanks to all who gave their time and effort to make sure that our Ukrainian language and culture will be preserved and protected for the benefit of those who honor and love our beautiful enchanted Ukrainian land, its people and customs. ” (translated from Ukrainian) * * * “Simply wonderful!" ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 1989 23
