OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XLVI JULY-AUGUST 1989 Editor: Marta Baczynsky IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ GFWC CONVENTION The General Federation of Women’s Clubs held its 98th International Convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma from June 10-15th. This year’s motto was “Education for Living.” The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organ izations is a member of the International GFWC and was represented at the Convention by its President Dr. Maria Kwitkovsky. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and the Gold Cross are Associate Organiza tions of GFWC. They were represented by Maria Sav chak, President of UNWLA, Iryna Kurowyckyj, member of the Executive Board of UNWLA, and Natalia Ivaniv, President of the Gold Cross. The GFWC unites members from 46 countries in the free world and embraces 16 international associate organizations. In the United States more than one half million women in various clubs are members of the organization. GFWC was organized in 1889 through the initiative of Jane Cunningham, a journalist from the newspaper "The New York World.” Ms. Cunningham was refused admission to a banquet for Charles Dickens which was held at the New York Press Club simply because she was a women. This precipitated great anger in her and the determination to right this injustice. Ms. Cunningham realized that there was power in numbers and hence fol lowed through on the idea of uniting women from all walks of life into one organization. In 1901 the club received its charter. Initially, it was referred to as the “ Housewife’s University” because it was there that women learned the basics of organizational life. GFWC is a conservative, patriotic and religious orga nization. The pre-Convention banquet honored the State of Oklahoma and its Indian heritage. It was a gala event which featured an authentic Indian “pow wow”. The following day, the opening of the Convention at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center got off to a rousing start with a special performance by the cast of “Dis- coveryland’s Oklahoma” presenting excerpts from the musical “Oklahoma”. The business part of the Convention opened with a call to order by Alice Donahue, the International Presi dent. Tulsa’s Mayor Rodger Rondle offered greeings to the delegates on behalf of the citizens of Tulsa with the Делегатки Міжнародніх Клюбів — чле нів Ґенеральної Федерації Жіночих Клюбів, учасниці 98-ої Конвенції Ґене ральної Федерації, яка відбулася в Тупьса, Оклагома 10- 15-го червня 1989 року.
