A new exhibition opened recently at the Ukrainian Museum — “Masterpieces in Wood, Houses of Worship in Ukraine.” The event was duly celebrated with recep tions, speeches and numerous accolades. Visitors and guests came in numbers to admire the new exhibit and were awed by the beauty and majesty of the display. There was a sense of pride and accomplishment which reverberated throughout the Ukrainian community. In the Museum an audible sigh of relief was heard — from the staff members. Months of preparation, count less days of repetative, detailed work has finally ended. The frenzy of vigorous physical activity of the last few weeks before the opening also came to an end. The exhibit was there, looking exquisite, perfect to the last detail, packaged and wrapped to be admired and praised, as if put there by a magic wand. If only it was all that easy! Museum begins as an idea proposed at an Executive Board meeting, usually many years before the labels are put under the exponents. The brainwork, so to speak, starts soon after, with the engagement of a curator for the project and the beginning of research, research, research. With each new exhibition, the Museum publishes a catalogue — not just any catalogue, but a thoroughly researched study of the subject matter. Although much of the work is done by outside professionals, jobs such as proofreading (again, again and again) is an in-house responsibility and done collectively by Museum staff members.
