The main compositional elements of church architec ture were the subordination of the roofs of the side compartments to the central one, symmetry, and the expression of the interior space of the building’s exte rior. Close harmony between plan and elevation is per haps unique. The urge to express on the exterior each element of the interior space is a characteristic of Ukrainian and especially ecclesiastic architecture. The picturesque quality of Ukrainian wooden architecture was achieved through the variety of roof designs. Al though the creative genius of master carpenters reached its peak in the innovative and daring structures of east ern Ukraine, the western regional variants were charac terized by a wealth and diversity of forms and the pres ervation of archaic features. Ukrainians’ profound attachment to timber architec ture can be seen in their desire to perpetuate in their new settlements the building traditions of their fore fathers. Thus, it is not surprising that not only the early Ukrainian settlers in the United States but also contem porary Ukrainian-Americans have striven to maintain in their ecclesiastic architecture the traditional images of their specific cultural group. The exhibit has been guest-curated by Titus Hew- ryk, Director of Facilities, Development of the University of Pennsylvania. A 112 page catalogue, written by Mr. Hewryk and illustrated by 200 photographs, drawings and a map, will accompany the exhibit. The catalogue is published in separate English and Ukrainian language editions. The intricately detailed scale models were built by the artist Bohdan Pevny. The exhibition was exqui sitely designed by Zenon Feszczak, Art Director of the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia, Pa.
