worry and grief for our fellow Ukrainians in the heart of that nuclear inferno. That evening, an interfaith prayer service for the vic tims of Chornobyl was held at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. Hundreds of people holding candles crowded into the church and the proceedings were tele vised and recorded by the now ever present news media. Portions of the service were shown and heard on the evening news on all New York networks. First Vice President of UNWLA, Maria Tomorug and Marta Danyliuk asked the editorial staff of Our Life magazine to compose letters to be sent to President Reagan, Secretary General of the United Nations, the UN Environmental Program, the International Atomic Energy Agency, to state legislators, senators and con gressmen. Presidents of Regional Councils of UNWLA were notified by telephone that samples of such letters would be sent to their branches, and members were encouraged to send them. Following is an example of one letter. In the wake of the devastating nuclear accident in Chornobyl, Ukraine, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and its members are deeply con cerned with the suffering and fate of our brethren in Ukraine. The political and economic restrictions imposed by the Soviet government deny the victims of this tragedy the aid they desperately need. Our Ukrainian commun ity stands ready to help in any way. In the name of humanity and all that is right, we plead with you to do all in your power by interceding with the Soviet government to allow international relief agencies, such as the Red Cross, access to the victims. We also ask your intervention with respect to lifting the restrictons on sending packages with medicine, food and clothing to the victims of this nuclear holocaust. * * * A letter from the IAEA in reply to UNWLA letter writing campaign.
