OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XVI DECEM BER 1984 Edition Marta Baczynsky CHRIST IS BORN! LET US PROCLAIM HIS GLORY THE TOPIC IS LEADERSHIP Undoubtedly, the first leader in the world was a woman. She must have been the one who initially ventured from the safety of the cave and led others to look for food, or else she delegated that task to her spouse. She also bore and raised future leaders. Industrialization changed all that, and a woman was thrust into what was until recently a male dom inated society. Progress in medi cine and technology in the last 30 years liberated the woman from the kitchen and diapers, creating an irre versible trend. The United States Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that in 1980 42.6 percent of the labor force were women. Of the executive and adm inistrative positions, 30.5 percent were held by women. It is not surprising how quickly women assumed top positions, since for thousands of years they nur tured the qualities of leadership in the everyday ness of running a home and raising a family. Recently the job of wife and mother was estimated at an annual salary of $42,000. Ultim ately we look to the Branch for the success of our organization and it is there that disturbing signs manifest themselves. New members are hard to come by and new Branches are rarely form ed. Attendance at general meetings is down to one-third of signed-up members, and it is very difficult to elect a Branch presi dent. We are lucky there are many women who carry that post from one election to another, but when they ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 1984 19 IN C E L E B R A T IO N O F C H R IS T S B IR T H A N D T H E N E W Y E A R W E E X T E N D O U R S IN C E R E G R E E T IN G S T O H O N O R A R Y P R E S ID E N T O F U K R A IN IA N W O M E N ’S L E A G U E O F A M E R IC A , L ID IA B U R A C H Y N S K A , H O N O R A R Y M E M B E R S A N D T O T H E G E N E R A L M E M B E R S H IP O F O U R O R G A N IZ A T IO N .
