HEALTH & WELLBEING By Dr. Maria Motyl BRAIN CHEMISTRY CRUCIAL IN SUICIDE VICTIMS The theory that mental and emotion al illnesses may result from chemical disorders in the brain is familiar, though proof has been elusive. R ecently scientists at Wayne State University and the National Institute of Mental Health have independently produced evidence that suicidal tendencies are influenced by a brain chemical abnormality. The brains of recent suicide victims were compared to those of victims of homicides, auto accidents and other violence. The suicides had been re ceiving imipramine, an antidepressant drug, which, to be effective, must bind to certain chemical sites in the brain. The scientists found that the cortex, or outer layer, of the suicides’ brains had 44 per cent fewer imipramine binding sites than did the control group brains. Imipramine binding activity, in turn, is thought to reflect the brain’s ability to use serotnin, a chemical that aids com- mumications between brain cells. Low serotonin levels have been found in the brains of suicides and have been linked to depression, aggression and impulsi- vity. Measuring serotonin or imipramine binding may lead to the screening and p reventive tre a tm e n t of p o te n tial suicides. TSS NOT FOR WOMEN ONLY Toxic-shock syndrome (TSS), an often fatal disease formerly viewed as as sociated with tampon use or menstrua tion only, has more recently been found among males as well as non-menstrua ting females. The disease can strike anyone in the population, under a variety of conditions. A research team at the U. S. Center for Disease C ontrol reported that sources of the disease include surgical incisions, childbirth, accidental wounds, burns, insect bites, abcesses, inflamma tion of the breast, bursitis, blood poisoning, gland infection. The researchers studied fifty-four cases of nonmenstrual TSS resulting from Staphylococcus aureus infection. These nonmenstrual occurrences of TSS were proportionately distributed among racial groups, ranging in age from new born to 75 years old and had a death rate of eleven percent. Also, TSS of non- vaginal origin appears as likely to hap pen to males as to females. What is responsible for the in creased number of nonmenstrual TSS cases? One explanation is that there is improved recognition and reporting- of the disease. Also the infecting organism may be changing its behavior. Whatever the explanation, such cases are on the rise, and the Center for Disease Control recommends that physicians suspect TSS in all patients who exhibit the ap propriate symptoms. NEW VACCINE FOR HEPATITIS В VIRUS At the present time there are about 200,000 to 300,000 new infections of he patitis В virus in the U. S. each year, re sulting in some 10,000 hospitalizations and 200 deaths. Many more cases in volve jaundice, fatigue and liver damage. Even more seriously, hepatitis В has been linked to the development of liver cancer. While this form of cancer is rare in the U. S., it is one of the major causes of death from cancer worldwide. In Africa and Asia hepatitis В is a major public health problem probably contributing to the high incidence of liver cancer in those regions. It is pos tulated that widespread use of a vaccine against hepatitis В would bring about a significant reduction in liver cancer mortality in the world today. The illness caused by hepatitis В virus was once called serum hepatitis because it could be passed through blood transfusions. People at risk today are medical workers, kidney dialysis patients, and others requiring frequent transfusions, as well as contacts with infected persons. At the present time, a vaccine for hepatitis В is coming onto the market. It is expected to be rather expensive because of the difficulty in preparing it from blood serum containing the virus. The hepatitis В vaccine, marketed by Merck, Sharpe & Dohme is the first completely new viral vaccine in ten years. H A T . ВІДГУКИ Коли, на біду, трапиться пригода і пригорить страва, яка варилася в емальованій посудині, то посудину важко відмити. Тоді, після випорожнення її, налити туди води та насипати порошку ’’Спік енд Спейн”, поставити на піч, щоб трохи покипіла. Припалена їжа відстане, і тоді легко таку посудину відмити.
