justices, in reaching another in the growing number of decisions outlawing discrimination on the basis of sex, found that an Alabama law authorizing alimony only for women as unjustly biased. Alabama courts had upheld the law, saying that there was “a duty of a man to sup port his wife.” Statutes in most states give men and women equal rights to alimony, but 11 states still provide alimony for wives only, according to a legal brief filed in the Supreme Court last year. Justice William Brennan, Jr., writing for the majority, said that any law that discrimi nated on the basis of sex carried “the inherent risk of reinforcing stereotypes about the proper place of women and their need for special protection.” The three dissenting justices did not necessarily oppose the court’s conclusion. Instead, they accused, their colleagues of being so eager to overturn the Ala bama statute that they decide in favor of a man, William Herbert Orr, who was not a bona-fide litigant in such a far-reaching decision. Orr had never asked for alimony, nor would he have been entitled to it anyway. After the court had announced its decision, Phyllis Schlafy responded by saying: “It’s bad for women; it’s the beginning of the end of all alimony" As a current law student, however, Schlafly should have been in formed of the fact that the decision had no bearing on laws passed by 39 states, all of which had changed their laws by extending alimony rights to men rather than denying them to women. The current decision supports a humane and sensible notion of alimony. It should be granted on the basis of need and income, the specifics of the marriage contract, work experience, health and even age. Like so many other items on the equal rights agenda, this decision is ultimately both pro-male and pro-female. Because it’s pro-fairness. ‘HOW TO WORK WITH THE PRESS PROPERLY" * T A N I A B U T 0 V I C H III. PICTURES If a picture is to accompany your press release it will most likely go to yet another editor who deals only with in printing photos. He will decide whether to use the picture or not. A. Picture editors in newspaper offices across the country agree to three major flaws that inevitably appear in nearly every publicity picture. 1. rank of commercialism 2. poor technical quality 3. lack of imagination B. Inviting the Photographer Before you ask a newspaper for photo coverage be sure that your meeting, convention or event merits this kind of journalistic attention. If it does, direct a memo to the picture editor and include your press release. C. Points in taking your own picture 1. news pictures should be staged, not merely snapped, (tell a story) 2. news pictures should always include animate and active subjects. 3. subjects should appear relaxed and natural. 4. subjects should never stare directly at the camera. 5. when possible, avoid including more than three people in one picture. 6. take a picture from more than one angle. 7. keep the background simple. 8. use good lighting. D. Writing photo captions The caption should list clearly and factually the following pertinent details: 1. identification of the people in the picture reading from left to right. 2. brief description of the action depicted or 3. brief summary of the event to which the picture per tains. 4. name, address, phone number of sending organization. 5. name and phone of sender (you) When typ in g a caption leave about three inches of blank space on the top. Then w ith the copy facing ou t lightly, glue or tape the pictu re (never staple or clip it). Double-space you r inform ation. IV. PRESS COVERAGE A. The Press Memo is an accepted method of inviting the press. The press memo should be typed on an 8 У 2 x 11 sheet of w hite paper. A press invitation requires a fo llo w up to determ ine how many reporters and photographers w ill attend. B. The Press Conference A press conference is a special meeting called fo r the pu r pose of m aking announcem ents of great im portance to repre sentatives o f all news media at the same time. The fo llo w in g questions can help determ ine w hether a press conference is neccessary: 1. Is the announcem ent o f great news value? 2. Is a ro u tine press release inadequate to cover all the info rm atio n? 3. Is the announcem ent com plicated enough to require ad ditiona l explanation by specialists? 4. Is it controversial enough to be m isinterpreted unless it is discussed in detail w ith reporters? C. The Press Party The press party or reception is an occasion at w h ich the press is entertained w h ile being exposed to a special interest of the host organization. Like the press conference, the press party is given fo r all news media at once and is tim ed to c o in cide w ith the news o f some special announcem ent o r event. A press party should take place w ith in a few days of the event. D. The Press Kit The press kit is a co lle ctio n of all the vital statistics of a special event.
