Olena Teliha 1 9 3 3 —1939 (The flood of rem iniscences draws near — Y. Sosiura) Unknown to us the startin g and the leaving — We do not understand the m easure rare When life into a wreath is darkly w eaving A t intervals our fa ith and our despair. On the resplendant day descends the shadow Of evil-boding clouds, a m ourning veil; And the cold night, a trem bling renegado, The falm ing morn embraces, bold and hale. The iron power th a t knows no lim itations God’s breath will m elt to tears of conquered pride, Will tw ist a lash of ruthless eonflagarations From tiny sparks that in the ashes hide. Thus have the steps we would have joined forever Been parted by God’s lim its for all time. W ithout warm words or glances of endeavour, We parted on the street in pantomime. But it can happen in a field o f dangers We may retrace the paths th a t once we trod. Again tomorrow we shall not be strangers A s we receive this glorious g ift from God. who spoke on Man’s World — W omen’s Place. In her talk she stated th a t technical and social changes have affected women more radically than men — the women’s movem ent today is the response to these changes. Her recommendations to women were, fir st — confidence in one’s self is the basis on which to con ceive the future, so make your new image v is ib le ; second — talk and act on your beliefs, in public and private — political action is an area where women can prove their capabilities. Mrs. Carmen Magni, Director of the Women’s Bureau of the Departm ent of La bor, was the second speaker. She spoke on the seem ing reluctance of qualified women to take ad vantage of opportunities now open to them. She urged m inor ity members to report discrim i nation in employment. The Workshops th a t followed were on — Jobs, Fam ily Living, Power Structure, and Volunteer service. I attended the Fam ily Living workshop which was con ducted by a husband and w ife team — a psych iatrist and an American history professor. I felt th a t at the outset they had set a n egative tone for the dis cussion by an opening statem ent th a t the fam ily structure is on th e w ay out to extinction with nothing to take its place. The m obility of society and the fact that through technology we are dependent on others and not on fam ily members, is weakening the fam ily structure, in their opinion. The discussion and com m ents from the participants were slow in coming and ju st as the members became more inter ested in each other’s point of view and a real exchange of ideas began taking place as the session ended. The Workshops conclusions were given at the final m eeting of the day. JOBS — although women are freein g them selves from old stereotypes, th ey m ust remember th a t they now have options. Women should take ad vantage of laws already on the books and see that they are ad hered to. VOLUNTEER SE R V ICE — should relate to the needs of the people, region and type of service needed. Volunteers m ust be prepared and trained. POWER STRUCTURE — Wom en are the traditional moral force in the home and should use the same influence in corporations. They should adopt a teaching role in business and help along a protege. Women in business m ust have a satisfactory life outside of the office. FAMILY LIVING — there is a growing need for supporting structures (day care centers, educating males on fem ale role) to fill the gap between the accommodations of society and the change in women's role. On Friday, National Council members who had attended other m eetings reported. Mrs. Mayna Jennings stated th a t participa tion in such “other” m eetings, from THE UK RA INIAN POETS Andrusyshen and Kirkconnell all over the United States and in other countries, was costly and m ost women and even organiza tions cannot afford it. She re ported on the Women’s Coali tion for the Bicentennial which was in complete disarray and not functioning — she suggested in volvem ent on local and state lev els. Member organization reports followed. Many were absent but had sent in reports which were not read. Am ong the m ost inter estin g reports was Mrs. Spaf- ford’s on the R elief Society of the Church of Latter Day Saints which was founded in 1842 by 18 women as a completely autono mous women’s organization op erating from t h e outset under strict parliam entary rules. They now number over 900,000 women all over the world. Mrs. Mc Millan reported on Church Wom- НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЛЮТИЙ, 1974 27
