Headquarters News UKRAINIAN RECIPES Berry Tart This year marks the 250th anniversary of the death of the Ukrainian philosopher Hry- horij Skovoroda, who was edu cated in the universities of West ern Europe and who worked out a unique philosophical system. He left innumerable writings. Our Regional Councils have received biographical material about the philosopher. We urge the individual branches to ac quaint themselves with this emi nent historical figure. The Centers are divided by Regional Council seats thus: Philadelphia (21 Branches) — 4 Day Centers. New York (16 Branches) ■— 4 Day Centers. Newark (13 Branches) ■— 3 Day Centers. New York—North (11 Bran ches) — 3 Day Centers. Detroit (14 Branches) — 2 Day Centers. Chicago (12 Branches) ■— 1 Day Center. Cleveland (9 Branches) — 1 Day Center. New England (7 Branches) ■— 2 Day Centers. San Jose, Calif. (3 widely scat tered Branches) — 1 Day Cen ter. Programs in the Centers are conducted in the Ukrainian lan guage. One Center (in Warren, Mich.) is designed for non- Ukrainian speaking children. For $15.00 a month a Ukrainian youngster can receive a high school education. Our Branches have shown a deep understanding of this un dertaking and to date have start ed 12 such scholarships. Now we appeal to our readers! Surely there are many Ukrainian fami lies who are financially able to help educate a needy Ukrainian girl in Brazil. We will be send ing out letters to various insti tutions and individuals in the Ukrainian community appealing for help. We strongly urge you to support us in this endeavor. Teodosia Savycka Social Welfare Chair man of the Executive Board ANNUAL BOARD MEETING On June 24-25, 1972 a Board Meeting of the Ukrainian Na tional Women’s League was held in Philadelphia. The main topic under discussion was the UN WLA financial policy and its changing goals. The topic was developed in several addresses. Our Financial Chairman Mrs. Olha Mussakowsky went through the financial reports of UNWLA Branches and Mrs. Iwanna Rozankowsky, Vice President, spoke about our outlook for the future. The question period and discussion which followed brought up many important de cisions. NEW PRESIDENT OF PHILA. FEDERATION Mrs. Stefanie Wochok, mem ber of UNWLA Branch 52 in Philadelphia, was elected Presi dent of the Philadelphia Federa tion of Women’s Clubs and Al lied Organizations. She took over the presidency in May 1972 and will hold office for two years. Mrs. Wochok is a charter member of UNWLA Branch 52, which was founded in 1942. As a Board member of Junior League 52 she became secretary of the Federation’s Junior League in the first year of mem bership. She has also served on the UNWLA National Board and helped to organize the World Congress of Ukrainian Women in 1948. 2 У 2 cups flour Уч cup butter 1 tbsp. vegetable shortening 3A cup sugar 2 e'gg yolks 2 tbsps. sour cream 2 lbs. fruit 2 tbsps. bread crum bs confectioner’s sugar Combine flour with next three ingredients, cutting in the but ter- Add egg yolks and sour cream and knead dough quickly. Roll out and place on baking sheet. Wash berries (cherries or strawberries) and spread to dry on paper towel. When dry, ar range on top of dough and sprin kle with confectioner’s sugar and cut into squares. Cool on serving plate. CULINARY TERMS We are continuing our glos sary of Ukrainian culinary terms. Caldron, couldron - — казан, казанок. Calf — теля, литка. Calf’s liver — теляча печінка. Calorie, calory — кальорія. Caloric — кальорійний.
