of pride and sorrow. Pride in the innate a rtis try of m y people — sorrow fo r the all but vanished arts. A great service to present and fu tu re generations of those of U krainian descent has been done by the donors of these invaluable works. There are many gaps in the collection, however. Many regions of Ukraine are not rep resented and several kinds of fo lk a rt are not included. Many of us have an item or two put away in a drawer or box. Things th a t our mothers or grandmoth ers and other relatives brought w ith them. Of course we value these things hig h ly — but how much more hig h ly they would be valued as p a rt of a museum col lection fo r all to share. In looking through your sto r age boxes and shelves you m ig h t also come across old European photographs, or Ukrainian books th a t have been le ft by deported relatives. These articles are of utmost importance today. Most of the books are no longer pub lished and there may be a tru ly rare book among the lot. Old European photos illu stra te ex actly the regional dress and style. I f you fin d such items please remember how valuable they can be fo r a heritage col lection — especially i f labelled as to exact region. Won’t you con sider donating your treasures to the museum ? The museum, which is being renovated and reorganized, w ill soon be available fo r browsing. An American of U krainian de scent cannot help becoming emo tiona lly stirred when actually surrounded by examples of his or her cultural heritage. Alexandra L.
