Headquarters News T he ju n io r U N W LA B ranch es have sta rte d “organizational w orkshops” w hich aim to in tro duce new er U N W LA m em bers to organizational theories and th e p ractical w orking out of lo cal com m unity problem s. Such w orkshops usually involve tw o or th ree ju n io r B ranches, and m ay be given in connection w ith a B ranch m onthly m eeting. It is desirable th a t th e chairm an of such a w orkshop be an experi enced wom an civic leader, p re ferably a g u est from out of tow n. The program should revolve around one m ain idea or prob lem w hich is exam ined in depth. A good inaugural p rogram m igh t deal w ith th e organization itself — its by-law s, history, m em ber ship and officers. The w orkshops will undoubtedly prove quite v a luable as m ore B ranches m ake w ider use of them . N. As a g ift ed poet she enriched U krainian lite ra tu re w ith h er w ritin gs and as a p atrio t she becam e an inspi ratio n to all U krainians who struggled fo r th e ir n atio n ’s fre e dom. U ncom prom ising and un- shakeable in h er beliefs, Olena Teliha served h er coun try and her people w ith zeal and dedica tion, and fo r th is w as destined to pay w ith h er life. W e urge all U N W LA B ran ch es to m ark th is trag ic d ate w ith appropriate observances. P rin t ed articles and essays about Ole na Teliha and selections from h er w ritings will be m ade available to B ranches shortly. L. W olyn etz ❖ Pre-school education is becom ing increasingly im p o rtan t in our com m unity. T his w ide-spread in te re st should be utilized and new D ay C enters established in th e B ranches. This, of course, en tails g re a t prep aration . P rio r to th e new school year, lists of p re school youn g sters m u st be draw n up, m eetings should be held w ith p aren ts, suitable class space found, and an experienced teach er hired. If th e re are no expe rienced teach ers in a given com m unity, special tra in in g classes m ay be held fo r qualified individ uals. M aterials are available from th e C entral H eadq uarters. K ly m y sh y n ❖ All B ranch financial rep o rts w ere due by D ecem ber 31, 1971, regardless of w hen B ranches will hold th e ir A nnual m eetings. W ell-balanced tre a su ry ac counts, compiled according to th e sam ples sen t out la st y ear by U N W LA C entral H eadquarters, provide th e basis fo r sound fi nancial rep o rts w hich are sen t out to H ead q uarters and th e In tern a l Revenue Service. E ach B ranch should receive an income ta x form from th e local B ureau of In tern al Revenue. It should be rem em bered th a t each B ranch has its own identifica tion num ber which it carries from one y ear to another. The identification num ber should be k ept on record. Should a new B ranch not y et have a num ber, it should m ake an effo rt to get one as soon as possible. All income ta x re tu rn s are due by M ay 15, 1972. This dead line m u st be adhered to ; o th er wise th ere is a $10 fine p er each d av ’s lateness. If a B ranch has d ifficulty in p rep arin g its retu rn , it should consult w ith its R egion al Council. 0 . U ntil now these B ranches w ere included in th e New Y ork R egional Council. H ow ever because of th e .great distance involved th e Connecti cut B ranches could not fully p a r ticip ate in th e Council’s work. Mix well and set pan in ano th er pan of w arm w ater. This will rise while you are p rep arin g th e n ex t step. B eat egg and egg yolks w ith sugar. Add lem on rind, flour, salt and m elted b u tter. Combine th ese two m ixtures and knead until thoroughly m ixed — about 5 m inutes. Leave in a w arm place to rise until dou ble in bulk (about 1V 2 h o u rs). M eanwhile pour boiling w ater over th e poppy seeds — drain and allow th em to dry partially. To these add sugar, lem on rind, raisins, n u ts and fold into stiffly beaten w hites. Divide dough in h alf and roll to У4, inch thickness*. Spread your poppy seed m ix tu re evenly on surface of dough and roll tigh tly. C ut into 1 inch slices, place on greased baking sheet and bake 45 m inutes a t 300 d e grees. * T his dough is fu n to handle. I t looks very sticky b u t w orks well on lig h tly floured board.
