m e — th e only th in g th a t is w anted in E nglish is H ead q u ar te rs com m unications! A p p aren t ly th e branches have th e E nglish sources fo r inform ation on U krainian custom s, costum es, history, a rts, lite ratu re , tra d i tions, holidays, etc. I shall sh o rt ly be req u estin g a list of these E nglish sources •— we need th em badly in New York. W ith v ery few exceptions, th ere was little indication of p a r ticipation in th e non-U krainian com m unity — a function p a r ti cularly suited to E nglish speak ing branches. Public relations a t th e g rass roots level is invalu able — fo r su rpassing in im por tance th e contacts on th e h ig h er organizational level. The E n g lish speaking branches, w hose m em bership includes teachers, nurses, lib rarians, social w ork ers, o th er professionals, business wom en and hom em akers, m igh t well plan fo r such p articipatio n as a group or th ro u g h individual m em bers and so support a vital purpose of th e U N W LA w hich is th e dissem ination of in fo rm a tion about th e U krainians in th e ir stru g g le fo r liberation and about th e ir achievem ents. M rs. M ary D ushnyck’s Public R ela tions P lan is a good source for suggestions. Such a program , of course, would presuppose th a t th e m em bers them selves are well inform ed on th ese su bjects. If such is no t th e case, th en an o th er facet of bran ch activ ity is indicated . . . self-education about U kraine, h er h isto ry (p ast and p resen t) and h er h eritag e (beyond pysanky and folk d an ces). T here was also very little in dication of in te r b ranch cooper ation. L anguage difficulties m ig h t explain th is. However, even th is can be surm ounted. In all branches, w ith o u t exception, th ere are m em bers who speak E nglish. If A m erican Soyuzanky m ake th e effo rt to atte n d fu n c tions of U k rain ian branches th ey will be welcomed and th in g s th ey don’t fully u n d erstan d will be explained. T he v isits should be reciprocal, w ith all Soyuzan ky m ade welcome a t an y branch, E nglish or U k rainian speaking. The e ffo rt will be g re a t a t first, b u t th e re su lts will be g ra tify ing. E nglish speaking branches should consider th e all-U krain ian branches as sources of in fo r m ation and assistance on all th in g s U krainian. A s a m a tte r of fact, several branches re p o rt ed th a t a good num ber of th e ir m em bers do speak and und er stan d U krainian, so th e language b a rrie r is no problem th ere. I ask all U krainian speaking branches to invite th e A m erican Soyuzanky to all th e ir program s, m ake th em welcome and assist them in th e ir desire to know and appreciate th e ir h eritage. OUR L IF E subscriptions have been resisted by E nglish speak ing branches because of th e lack of m aterial in E nglish. H ow ever, from th e survey sheets I see th a t branches w ith a good proportion of m em bers who can read U krainian have few su b scribers, and in one branch, w here one h alf of th e m em bers read U krainian, th e re are none. A n increase in th e E nglish m a teria l is planned and prom ised, b u t w hy not subscribe now and sh are th e info rm atio n? A m eri can Soyuzanky can dem onstrate supp ort fo r th e ir organization by subscribing to OUR L IF E and con trib uting articles of gen eral in te re st fo r publication. The to tal m em bership of th e branches re p o rtin g is 102. If we presum e an o th er 60-70 in those not y et reporting, we g et a to tal E nglish speaking m em bership of about 172 — less th a n one te n th of th e to tal U N W LA m em ber ship. W e m u st agree th a t such a sm all p ercentage cannot w ith any fairn ess expect e x tra special attention . Y et m y assignm ent :is ju s t th a t — special atten tio n to th e E nglish speaking branches. A m I out of order in expecting good cooperation from them ? M rs. A n astasia V olker p u t to g eth er a v ery detailed and in te re stin g plan fo r a m em bership drive. It can be im plem ented a t any tim e of th e year. E nglish speaking branches can easily double th e ir m em bership by fol low ing th ro u g h on h er sugges tions.
