The UNWLA participated 'n “A Salute to the International Council of Women” (ICW), sponsored by the National Coun cil of Women of the United States (NCW-US) on April 1st at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City, on the occasion of the ICW’s 83rd anniversary. The highlight of the program was an international fashion show presented by Alexander’s Department Store as a benefit to aid the ICW to carry on its educational and welfare work, as it relates to women. The ICW, encompassing 20 million women, is comprised of councils in 65 countries, including the NCW- US of which the UNWLA is one of its 29 member organizations. Mrs. Stefania Pushkar, former president of UNWLA, serves as NCW-US Migration Chairman. Ukrainian girl students, at tired in costumes from the Pol tava, Kiev, Borshchiv, Lemko and Hutsul regions of Ukraine, acted as hostes aides, under the guidance of Miss Esther Morse, and aroused much interest among the guests. A color film of the event is to be shown in the 65 countries with ICW councils, throughout the world. The Ukrainian participation was arranged by Mrs. Mary Dushnyck, UNWLA Public Rela tions Chairman. Among the hundreds present were the Ambassador of Sierra Leone, John J. Akar, and his wife, who came from Washing ton, D. C .; wives of United Na tions Ambassadors — Mrs. C. Phillips, USA; Lady Crowe, the United Kingdom; Lady McIn tyre, A ustralia; Mrs. S. Sen, In dia ; Mrs. Y. Tekoah, Israel, and Mrs. T. Molefhe, Botswana — as well as representatives from sev eral other countries, many in native dress, and distinguished women leaders. Ukrainian wom en present were Mesdames M. Lesawyer, A. Berwecky, N. Ba- biak, M. Smejka, M. Sova-Ro- tella and R. Hnatkiv. Ambassador Akar in his salute to the ICW recognized its signi ficant contributions to underde veloped countries and told of wide advances by women in po litics and the professions in his country. Outlining ICW programs, Mrs. Mary Craig Schuller, ICW Presi dent, stressed the urgent need for support to implement ICW projects worldwide, to carry out the aims of the ICW founders ‘‘for the enlightenment of wom en, for the enhancement of wom- ciety,” and for action to realize human rights in actual practice.
