OUR LIFE MONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. XXVIII. MAY, 1971 UNWLA Convention The Convention of the Ukrain ian National Womens League of America which was held on May- 21-23 at the Ukrainian Nation al Association’s resort in Ker- honkson, N. Y. has evoked live ly comment from the UNWLA membership. The fact th at this convention was attended by the largest number of delegates to date is in itself noteworthy. The delegates showed keen interest in the proceedings and continued their discussions well into the night. The convention marked the 100th anniversary of birth of Lesya Ukrainka and had for its motto a citation from one of her poems: “Awake, who has life, whose thought is uprising!” Lesya Ukrainka’s portrait adorn ed the wall of the conference room and UNWLA delegates had the opportunity of viewing an art exhibit based on themes from her works. Both convention addresses dealt with ideas ex pressed in Lesya Ukrainka’s work as they affect us today. The artistic program which was presented during the banquet was also dedicated to this great Ukrainian poetess. A welcome aspect of this year’s convention was the large attendance of young women. The junior Branches sent many rep resentatives to the convention and a special Session dealing with the work of these Branches was held. Their panel discussion on community work was note worthy. The panelists stressed No. 5 the importance of correcting misinformation about Ukraine in the American press, and a de cision was made to organize a special commission which would look into this m atter. Numerous other interesting and noteworthy ideas were ex amined in the course of the con vention and taken under close consideration by the various commissions. In a very short time all UNWLA Branches will receive copies of the resolutions which were adopted during the Convention. HONORING LESIA UK RAINKA One of the member bodies of the Ukrainian Congress Com mittee of America is the Coordi nating Board of Ukrainian Wom en’s Organizations. It is headed by Mrs. Stefania Pushkar, a member of the Executive Board of the UCCA, and its member ship is comprised of representa tives of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America the Ukrainian Gold Cross, the Women’s Division of the Organ ization for the Defense of the b'our Freedoms of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Aid Society, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Sisterhood Association. The Coordinating Board has been directed by the UCCA Ex ecutive Board to arrange a meet ing at the Lesya Ukrainka mon ument in Cleveland. In accord ance with the directive the Board has prepared a program for the meeting which will be held on September 19, 1971. At this time the Gardens of Culture of the city of Cleveland will sponsor a Friendship Day, and this year’s Friendship Day will be held in honor of Lesya U kra inka.
