Ukrainian Easter taible arranged by Elaine K eryluk Austin and Kathy Orebaugh Reinke ALPHA XI DELTA FRATERNITY The Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity Seattle Alumnae had the pleas ure, September 30. 1970, of ac cepting the invitation of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Seattle Alumnae to enter their Theme Table Display, a part of their an nual Flaming Festival. Our “Ukrainian Easter Holiday” ta ble placed second in the competi tion among visiting alumnae groups. All guests attending were entitled to cast one vote for the table of their choice. The table was prepared by Elaine Keryluk-Austin (Beta Theta ’60) and Kathy Orebaugh Reinke (NU ’59). The featured items were a traditional Easter food basket, pysanky (intricate ly dyed eggs), wood inlay, pot tery, costumed figurines and lovely hand-embroidered linens. The linens were loaned for the display by Mrs. W. Klos and Mrs. N. Demco, Ukrainian-Americans living in the Seattle area. An information sheet was compiled listing each item tell ing its significance in the tradi tional Easter celebration. Our idea and information sheet were so enthusiastically received that the guests kept Mrs. Keryluk- Austin busy all day answering quetions. folk art. He emphasizes the strong opposition of the Ukrain ian people to this destruction and their determination to pre serve the various forms of folk art. For us Valentyn Moroz’s cour ageous protest should serve as an inspiration. He has shown us that we should use every means available to us to preserve the beautiful folk art created by our people. In our Ukrainian Folk Art Mu seum we have a fine collection of Ukrainian embroideries, wood carvings, Easter eggs, and oth er examples of folk art. This fine collection becomes doubly impor tant when we remember that Ukrainian folk art is deliberate, ly destroyed in the Soviet Union as yet another means of enforced Russification. L. B. “UNKNOWN HEROINE” BRANCH 14 ORGANIZED IN HOUSTON, TEXAS The UNWLA has gained still another branch in its steady growth and development as the leading Ukrainian American women’s organization in the U.S.A. The latest addition to the UNWLA family is in far-away Texas, where a group of hardy ladies living in Houston decided that their identity in the com munity would be strengthened as an organized entity. Initial steps were taken in June, 1970, when a group of la dies met with UNWLA Public Relations Chairman, Mrs. Mary Dushnyck, who was visiting Houston, the booming south western metropolis. Known as “Space City U.S.A.,” Houston is the center of astronaut training, equipment testing and flight control for Apollo moon land ings. The wheels were set in mo tion and on January 10, 1971 a group of determined women, led by the initiating group consist ing of Mesdames Justyna Uschak Anita Wheeler, Irene Pawlow- ski and Miss Helen Evans, held its organizational meeting in the hall of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Pius X. Mrs. Uschak welcomed all and requested the pastor, Rev. Dmytro Blazejow- sky, STD, HER, to deliver the opening prayer. Mrs. Stefania Iskiw was chos en presiding chairman of the meeting, with Mrs. Pawlowski as secretary. Following the reading of the UNWLA By-la^s and Constitution in Ukrainian and English by Mrs. Iskiw and Mrs. Wheeler, respectively, Mrs. Us chak explained the purposes and work of the UNWLA and the necessity for a branch in Hous ton. Thereupon 12 women signed as members and elected unani mously the following as branch officers: Mrs. Justyna Uschak, Presi dent ; Mrs. Anita Wheeler, Vice President and Public Relations Chairman; Miss Helen Evans, Secretary; and Mrs. Irene Pawlowski, Treasurer; Auditing Committee: Mrs. Stefania Iskiw, Chairman, Mrs. Nina Yuchne- wicz and Mrs. Katherine Sadow- sky. Other branch members are Mesdames Marcia Crabb, Anna Zablockyj, Anna Slavych, Sophie Kryckyj, and Miss Anne Sla vych, as well as Mesdames Aga- nita Jakushew and Sophie Mosz- kowicz (who joined subsequent ly), totalling 14 members. It was decided that the branch would be known as the “Un known Heroine” branch in hon or of those Ukrainian women who are called upon to make un told sacrifices in the struggle against their communist cap tors. As its first program, the new branch planned a pre-Lenten
