APRIL, 1971 S p a r k s in t h e D a r k n e s s At our last Convention we pledged ourselves to the difficult task of bringing light where there is darkness. That was the meaning of our Convention mot to. Even though the worde were written by a woman born a hun dred years ago, they are very appropriate today. Today, espe cially in our own homeland there is the darkness of intolerance and of persecution. Young intel lectuals are imprisoned, sent to labor camps, or exiled for dar ing to point out instances of Russian imperialism, and for de fending their own cultural herit age. We shall not recount here all those whom we know to be unjustly persecuted. The list would be too long. Among them Lesya Ukrainka are many women, who will not renounce their ideals in the face of the most severe punishments. Of great interest to us here is the fact that they do not stand alone. Their sacrifice does not go unnoticed. A veritable wave of protests is sweeping Ukraine. Taking into consideration the na ture of the Communist regime, where any sign of disagreement brings dire consequences, this shows great courage on the part of the protestors. All the more are we heartened when we see how many persons, how many women risk all they have by signing petitions for the release of political prisoners, especially of Valentyn Moroz. Women from all walks of life are protesting No. 4 the injustice done to him and others like him. They are count ing on us to support their pro test ,to bring to light their suf ferings, to let the world know of the darkness in which they are enclosed. They strike sparks of discontent with injustice, it is for us not to let the sparks die. We need their light to guide us through the contentment of our everyday life, we need it to light the path for our children. We need to nurture these sparks of protest in order that one day they might become an all-con suming fire that will burn away slavery and persecution, but al low freedom and justice to reign supreme in our own land. UKRAINIAN CERAMICS SHOW On April 24—May 2 the First Ukrainian Ceramics Show was held in the Ukrainian Folk Art Museum in New York City. The show was announced in Decem ber, 1970, and all ceramic hobby ists were invited to participate. Winning entries will be exhibit ed at the XVI Convention of UNWLA at “Soyuzivka.” DAY CENTERS IN DETROIT Our Ukrainian Day Centers are getting more and more chil dren with no knowledge of the Ukrainian language. For their benefit UNWLA has established Centers which will be conducted in the English language. Two such Centers are already in op eration in the Detroit Region — one in Warren, and the other in Dearborn. The teachers are em ploying a new method of study which alows youngsters to learn each word in both languages.
