Ukrainka, Lesya. Lesya Ukra- in ka ; life and work by Constan tine Bida, selected works tran s lated by Vera Rich. Toronto. Published by the Women’s Coun cil of the U krainian Canadian Committee by U n iversity of To ronto Press, 1968. Pp. 259. I t was Percival Cundy’s trans lations of Lesya U krainka the S p irit of Flame published in 1950, which introduced the great U krainian poetess to the English speaking world. Now a compan ion volume has appeared. I t sup plements Cundy’s book in a beautiful way and adds new d i mensions to what is known in the Western world about the f ir s t lady of U krainian letters. One th ird of the new book consists of a study o f Lesya U krainka’s life and w ork w r it ten by Professor Constantine Bida of the U n iversity of O tta wa. I t is fu ll of little known fas cinating biographical detail and is certainly the most extensive such study available in English. Vera Rich, the English poet ess, has provided complete Eng lish translations of the three great dramatic works: “ Stone Host,” “ O rgy” and “ Cassandra,” as well as complete renderings of “ Robert Bruce” and “ Seven Strings.” Only two short ly ric poems o f Lesya U krainka appear both in Cundy’s book and in Vera Rich’s colection: these make fo r in te r esting comparisons of the two translators and th e ir style. The rest of the material, however, is presented here fo r the f ir s t time and complements the S p irit of Flame, which gave us a good selection of Lesya U krainka’s ly ric a l and dramatic poems and th a t gem of Ukrainian lite ra tu re — the fa ir y drama “ Forest Song.” Two good talkers . not w o rth one good listener. REPORT OF U N W L A BRANCH 58 A t a recent meeting of Olena Teliha Branch 58, the follow ing officers were elected: Helen Se- dorak, President; Oresta Kara- lash Vice-President; Evelyn Go- dzak, Recording Secretary; Nell Sosnowsky, Corresponding Sec re ta ry ; Nellie M artyn, Treasur er ; Anne Zablocky, Historian. On March 4, our Branch, on behalf of the Regional Council, presented an Easter egg demon stration at the PTA meeting of the Cooper Elementary School, Livonia. Olga Hubchik hosted the program. P atricia Kowal- czyk demonstrated the a rt of m aking pysanky, step by step, as the group watched. The pro gram also featured talented Ma- rusia Nazarenko who played the bandura and sang several songs. The program was enthusiastical ly received and the PT A presi dent said i t was the largest group attendance they had in several months. Other members particip a tin g in the presentation were Helen Sedorak and M ary Kowalczyk. I w ill use some of the in fo rm a tion fo r the w rite-up which the local paper has asked me to do fo r them. I t w ill be an illu strate d article about how I make py sanky, and of course I w ill in clude some facts about Ukraine and some of the legends which so bea u tifu lly describe Ukraine Young woman of the Yavoriv region in Western Ukraine in folk costume and our people. I w ill do the i l lustrations and at the same tim e w ill have a fu ll window display at a local clothing store. So I am very busy doing a good deed. You, who do so much to spread Ukrainian culture and represent i t as fa ith fu lly as possible, w ill understand th a t it wasn’t lazi ness or indifference th a t kept me from sending in m y renew al. I do cherish the magazine and make use of it.
