W OM AN OF CO NSCIENCE A W A R D W ith a deep sense of pride the members of Soyuz Ukrainok Branches 72, 53 and 32 honored A nastasia Volker, UNWLA Vice-President and Provincial Chairman, at a Reception held October 18, 1968, at the U krain ian Institute of America, New York City. The reception was given in recognition of Mrs. Vol- ker’s having been chosen as one of the recipients of the National Council of Women’s “Woman of Conscience” Award. The award was presented by Mrs. Louis J. Robbins, President of the National Council of Wom en of the United States, at a luncheon held on October 15, 1968, at the New York Hilton Hotel in conjunction w ith their 40th Biennial Meeting. In citing Mrs. Volker, the President stated th a t “she has been able to bridge the gap between her na tive Ukraine and her adopted country, the United S ta te s; she has recognized for herself and her fellow ‘new’ American citi zens the equal importance of their rights and their responsi bilities ; and she has been an eminent example of the enrich m ent to the United States which high minded foreign born men and women can bring.” Other recipients of the “Wom an of Conscience” Award were Mrs. Dean Rusk and Mrs. M ar tin L uther King, Jr. The National Council of Wom en of the United States, of which the UNWLA is a member, repre sents over 15,000 women. Their 40th Biennial M eeting was de voted to the subject of Human Rights which is the prevailing concern in today’s world. The Council upheld the observance of the principles of the United Nations document on Human Rights and underlined the fact th at universal Human R ights do “begin in small places, close to home.” Em inent political and in ternational leaders, including vice-presidential candidate Ed mund S. Muskie and Senator Ja cob K. Javitz, spoke on “Human Rights In Conflict.” UNWLA participants in the all day public forum included: Stefania Pushkar, P resid en t; Irene P adoch; K atherine Pele- sh o k ; Lydia Diachenko, Phila delphia Regional Council P res ident; Dorothy Losowyj, Presi dent of Branch 32; and Rosalie Polche, President of Branch 72. In the workshop relating to the Role of the M inority Groups, A nastasia Volker spoke on “The R ight to be D ifferent.” A t the reception given in Mrs. Volker’s honor at the Institute, Rosalie Polche, as Chairman, congratulated the guest of honor on receiving this distinct honor which will be long rem embered and recorded in the annals of Soyuz Ukrainok. Mrs. Polche in troduced Alexandra Riznyk, President of Branch 53, who gave a brief biographical sketch of Mrs. Volker. Congratulations were extended by Lydia Bura- chynska, representing the Cen tral Office, Olha Sonewycka, representing the New York Re gional Council, and Irene Lewyc- ky, representing the Newark Re gional Council. A charm w ith the inscription “A Date to Rem ember” was giv en to Mrs. Volker by the E ng lish-speaking Branches and was presented to her by Dorothy Lo sowyj, President of Branch 32.
