ACTIVITIES OF UNWLA CHAPTER 37 IN DETROIT MICHIGAN On March 20, 1967, U N W L A Branch 37 took p art in the an nual Crowley Days, an a ffa ir organized by the Federation of Women’s Clubs of Metropolitan D etroit, of which we are a mem ber. This day is set aside each year to provide the member clubs of the FWC w ith the op p o rtu n ity to display and demon strate th e ir club activities. Our chapter presented a U k rainian Easter egg demonstra tion. Our display featured wood carvings, embroideries, ceramics and pysanky. We are extremely proud of the fact th a t our booth was presented w ith an award fo r the c re a tivity shown in our cul tu ra l acitvities. We also received a check fo r $25 fro m the Crow ley M ilner Co. fo r the largest membership attendance at the a ffa ir. The Crowley Days not only gave our members a day away fro m household activities, but also provided them w ith the op p o rtu n ity to shop leisurely, watch a fashion show, lunch w ith th e ir friends, and view the work done by other organiza tions in our community. S. Fedyk OBITUARY On March 27 we learned th a t our dear member, V irg in ia Szluk had passed away. She was taken fro m her fa m ily in the prim e of her life at the age of 38. V irg in ia had joined our Branch in 1961. In 1964 the Szluk fam ily le ft D e tro it to make th e ir home in Goleta, California. There again V irg in ia did all she could to become a member of the community in which she lived and to fam iliarize local residents w ith her U krainian heritage and culture. B u t her dreams and ambitions were short-lived, fo r illness struck suddenly and mercilessly. Refusing to give in to it, she continued to work w ith even greater determination. In spite of her condition she remained cheerful and helpful to all who came in contact w ith her. V irg in ia w ill be remembered by all who knew her. Our deep- set sympathy is extended to her fa m ily and our prayers are of fered th a t she may rest in peace. S. Fedyk A leader duplicates himself in others. He is a “man” builder. He helps those under him to grow big because he realizes that the more big people an organization has, the stronger it will be. WHAT TO READ ABOUT UKRAINE AND THE UKRAINIANS Hrushevskyj, Mykhailo. A History of Ukraine. Edited by 0. J. Frederiksen, New Haven. Yale U n iversity Press, 1941. Pp. 629. An English condensation of a standard U krainian h isto ry in twelve volumes by the most prominent modern U krainian historian and f ir s t president of the U krainian National Repub lic. An excellent presentation of scholarly m aterial on the history of Ukraine fro m prehistoric times to the end of the 19th century, this book is not only a must fo r all students of U k rainian history, but a deep well of national pride and national consciousness fo r Ukrainians everywhere. Ukrainka, Lesya. Spirit of Flame: a collection of the works of Lesya Ukrainka. Translated by Percival Cundy. New York, Bookman Associates, 1950. Pp. 320. One of the three greatest U k rainian poets, Lesya U krainka is perhaps the one who stood closest to the currents of West ern European lite rature. Her choice of subject m atter and her philosophy of life w ill be w arm ly accepted and appreciated by the admirers of Byron and Shelley w ith whom she had a kinship of sp irit. The translations by Per cival Cundy are probably the best of those available in Eng lish. The selections include both the lyrica l and the dramatic poems, as well as a critica l essay on the life and work of th is great of U krainian letters.
