Let's Communicate In the June issue of Our Life, our Organization Chairman, Mrs. Mary Dushnyck gave a survey of the activity of English-speak ing UNWLA Branches. We learned what were the achieve ments of the seven Chapters, founded and led by American- born members of UNWLA. We can be proud of it. Each of these Branches has its field of activity and achievements. Some of them have even pioneered in looking for new ways and ideas. The folk art projects of Branch 37 and 53, the musicals and raf fles of Branch 72, the Easter egg demonstrations of Branch 61 and the Embroidered Fashion Show of Branch 53 evidence this. It is fine proof of the efforts of socially-minded workers in our Branches. They are growing in ideas and experience and are attracting other members by their work. We are progressing, as stated by Mrs. Mary Dush nyck in her article, in furthering the aims and purposes of UN WLA and are looking forward to an increasingly active future. To this Organization Chair man’s voice the Editorial Board is now adding its request. It is not as satisfied as she, especial ly with its news service, in the previous year. In 1962-63 several Branches reported more fre quently and thanks to their readiness we could give more news about their work. We are specially obliged to Mrs. Anasta sia Volker, Mrs. Mary Dushnyck, Mrs. Myrtle Slaby, Mrs. Alexan dra Riznyk and Mrs. Mary Su- chorsky for their frequent and full reports and their encourag ing spirit in the news. However there are Branches without any report, in the previ ous year. This is indeed sad. We know they were active during this time and have excellent workers. But they did not care to report; and thus did not appear in the pages of Our Life. We re gret this: for we need each other. We are hopeful of a change. We wish to enlarge the contact with our Branches and to in crease our reporting service. It is not a matter of reporting big events only. We like having re ports of Annual Meetings, the Board and its officers, but we would also like reports about the monthly meetings. At these meetings there are interesting topics and discussions that were we furnished with a report of them could well be helpful and in spiring to distant Branches. What women living out in “Podunk” some lonely, little hamlet, far from thriving com- hunities would not welcome read ing a detailed description from some Branch, like the Detroit Branch about that so fascinating and tantalizing Old World Mar ket at the International Insti tute? These ladies might have something to send to it, for ex hibit or possible sale. And why was the student who toured Russia not encouraged to sent her account of it, with pic tures to Our Life ? And why was not a copy of the Detroit Branch member’s study of the “philo sophy of Communism” not sent in for entire publication—or ex cerpts of it, with pictures to Our Life ? Nine tenths of our planets population are “arm chair travel ers,” longing for reports from far places. Such things as these and of course all the undertak ings of any Branch are of uni versal interest to women, wher ever they live. We learn to know each other by our endeavors. And were more descriptive and specific accounts of Branch ac tivities made it is likely, due to the law of counteraction, it would result in an upsurge of ideas from all Branches. We are often called upon to in crease the English pages of Our Life. But we do not hear what should be its contents, its col umns. Which one is interesting our readers ? Do they want artic les about the Ukrainian cultural heritage? Do they wish to get acquainted with Ukrainian life in the USA? Do they appreciate practical advise as to decorating their home, or Ukrainian cook ery? All this is called—contact with readers. It is this vivid stream which links each magazine with its readers and vice versa. It is this stream which makes our work worth while and depreci ates it if it does not exist. Let’s Communicate then. Let’s become a large, unity-minded family of UNWLA members who are striving for the same goal and working in the same organi zation. The English pages of Our Life are our link and our plat form. Let us use them the best we can. AN INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY At the opening of the 75th Conference of the International Women’s Council, the first inter national directory of key-women and key-women’s organizations in the United States of America and Council countries was dis tributed. Intended for perennial use as a reference guide and di rectory, the book was presented as a gift to Council delegates and visiting National Council Women or International Council Women members. This pocket-size vol ume, of the international world of women will be an indispens able manual in each women’s organization. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ВЕРЕСЕНЬ, 1963 13
