It is m ade o f w oolen or cotton fab ric i n dark b u t ga y colors — red, green or blue. T he m aterial can be plain or a sm all floral print. A s th e sk irt is fu ll, th e m a terial m u st be w rinkled a t th e top. T he sk irt len gth covers th e k nees b u t m u st be a l i ttle sh ort er th an th e sh irt. T he h em of th e sh irt and esp ecially its em b roidery m u st be seen. P laid sk irts are n ot used in th e K iev and P oltava region. T he top of th e sk irt is cover ed b y a sm all strip o f th e sam e m aterial. T he sk irt openin g can be closed w ith a zipper, or a b u t ton. If th e m aterial is plain you can apply an adornm ent o f sm all rib bons. V elv et or silk ribbons of d ifferen t colors h ave to b e a t tached 2-3” above th e h em in 3 or 4 row s. In case th e sk irt w as red, and th e em broidery (th e K iev d esign s are u su ally in red and b lack ), th e apron w as th en o f d ifferen t color — a gold-* en yellow or a q u iet green . In case th e sk irt is green , th e ap ron could be a golden yellow too or a dark red. W hen th e sk irt h as a flow er p rint, th en m atch th e apron w ith th e color o f th e flow ers. T he apron h as to b e trim m ed also. T here are d ifferen t w a y s to do so. It can be h em m ed w ith w oolen th read of d ifferen t col ors. Or it can h ave 3 row s o f rib bons lik e th e sk irt. F in ally it could be em broidered. T h e de sig n could b e placed in th ree row s — th e w id est ( 1 ^ ” ) on th e bottom , th e second (1 ” ) a little h igh er and th e th ird ( ^ ” ) on th e top o f it.
