A p p earin g on th e p rogram w h ich w as arranged b y th e vice-presi- dent o f th e B ranch, M rs. M ary L esaw yer, w ere C h ristin a K ar p evych soprano, and E ugenia V olz, p ian ist. M iss K arpevych, received her B .S. in M usic from H un ter C ollege and her M .S. in L ibrary Science from Co lum bia U n iv ersity and is p res en tly stu d yin g voice w ith L illian N ich ols. M iss V olz h as stud ied w ith th e n oted U k rain ian p ian ist, D aria K aranovych, fo r th e p ast fiv e years and h as w on sev eral aw ards and a scholarship from th e M usic T eachers C ollege o f M ontclair, N . J. T he p rogram w as opened by M rs. M ary D u shn yck , P resid en t of B ranch 72, w ho outlined b riefly th e w ork and aim s of th e club and w ho p resen ted M iss K arpevych and her accom pa n ist, M iss O lga D m ytriw to th e audience. M iss K arpe vych b egan th e concert w ith tw o U k r a i n ia n son gs — “B abvne L ito” b y S ich yn sk y and “A y str y ” b y L ysen ko, follow ed b y S ch ub ert’s “S taen d ch en ” and G rieg’s “Ich lieb e dich.” M iss V olz’s fir st tw o selection s w ere B ach ’s P relude in G Sharp M in or and B eeth oven ’s Sonata in F M inor, O pus 10. In th e second p art o f th e pro gram M iss K arpevych san g th e aria “D eb, vien i, non tard ar” from M ozart’s opera “T he M ar riage o f F ig a ro ” and “Si m i chi- am ano M im i” from P u ccin i’s “L a B oh em e.” T he con clu din g sec tion o f th e con cert b y M iss V olz con sisted o f C hopin’s W altz in F Sharp M inor, P ro k o fieff’s P relude in C M ajor and th e “Car p ath ian P oem ” o f M . F om enko. B oth M iss K arp evych and M iss V olz, as w ell as M iss D m ytriw , w ere en th u sia stica lly applauded fo r th eir fin e p erform an ces b y th e ap p reciative audience w h ich filled th e h all beyond cap acity. A fter th e m u sicale a social w as held during w h ich refresh m ents w ere served on tab les set w ith U k rain ian em broidered cloth s, candles and U k rain ian ce ram ics. T he g u ests m in gled w ith th e club m em bers, renew ed old acq u ain tances and m et m an y of th e n ew er gen eration. It w as m ost en cou ragin g to see so m any you n g people p resen t. A lso am ong th e g u ests w ere several A m erican s and rep resen tatives from oth er n ation alities, as w ell as m an y p rom in en t U k rain ian s, includ ing M rs. Irene Padoch, head of N . Y . “O kruzhna R ad a.” T h is program , a p roject o f th e C ultural D epartm en t w h ose chairm an is M rs. M yroslava K arp, w as a jo in t effo rt o f th e m em bers o f B ranch 72. M rs. A n ne B ezko, treasu rer, w as in ch arge o f th e refresh m en ts and M rs. L ily B ochonko, secretary, w as respon sible for th e in v ita tion s w h ich w ere b eau tifu lly p rinted under th e au sp ices o f M iss A nn M arko. T he su ccess of th e m u sicale w as a ttested to b y th e fa c t th a t m an y g u ests ex p ressed a hope th a t th e club w ould sponsor a sim ilar program in th e n ear fu tu re as w ell as th e fa c t th a t th e B ranch gained sev eral new m em bers. A little la t er th e In ternation al W om en’s E x h ib it in N ew Y ork C ity, and th e p articip ation o f U k rain ian w om en in it w as m entioned . T he n ew s reached th e desired d esti n ation s, for in m an y letters from behind th e Iron C urtain th ese even ts w ere com m ented upon. On A p ril 25, 1962 V oice of A m erica g ave an in terview w ith M rs. K ath erin e P elesh ok of N ew Y ork C ity. M rs. P elesh ok w as U N W L A V ice-P resid en t and is now U N W L A B oard m em ber, and P resid en t of U N W L A B r. 1 in N ew Y ork C ity. T he top ic o f th e in terview w as th e w ork o f th e U k rain ian N ation al W om en ’s L eagu e in gen eral, and th e h isto ry o f its fir st B ranch sp e cially.
