Let's Make Our Plans W ith sum m er vacation s behind us, w e sin cerely hope th a t our m em bers are ready and eager to con tinue all th eir w orth w h ile p u rsu its and are w illin g to a s sum e n ew resp on sib ilities in an effo rt to expand th e role of “So- yu z U k rain ok.” N atu rally our p aram ount in te rest is to fo ster a m ore active and efficien t organ ization and to increase th e m em b ership o f th e U N W L A . W e m ay help to ach ieve th ese aim s b y h avin g th e b ranches form u late variou s pro gram s fo r th e year o f 1962-63 w h ich w ill prove b en eficial n ot on ly to th em b u t w ill engender an in terest in our organization b y non-m em bers as w ell. W h at can you do? If you w ish to em bark on a p rogram to spread U k rain ian cu ltu re, you could organ ize an ex h ib it o f U k rain ian folk art, p ysan k y or p ain tin gs a t a public library, a school, you r local bank, a d ep artm en t store, an ex p osition or at a fair, su ch as th e one in P h ilad elp hia. Or you m ay w ish to p resen t som e u n iversity or library w ith a copy o f th e n ew U N A “U k rain e: A C oncise E ncyclop ed ia”” or oth er U k rain ian w orks in E n glish . B ranch 72 o f N ew Y ork C ity recen tly had an ex h ib it o f U krainian folk art and p ysan k y in th e m ain branch o f th e B rooklyn P ublic L ibrary and it is p resen tin g a copy o f th e E ncycloped ia to a u n iversity. Or you m ay w ish to sponsor som e talen ted you n g people in a con cert and g iv e th em an op p ortu n ity to appear b efore th e public. Such a m u sicale and a social w ere h eld b y B ranch 72 a t th e U k rain ian In stitu te in N ew Y ork recen tly. N o doubt you h ave heard o f th e S v ia ty V ech ir w h ich B ranch 60 of C leveland celebrates each w in ter, and th e annual picnic o f P h ilad elp h ia’s B ranch 53. If you are h andy w ith th e needle, you could follow th e su it o f B ranch 37 of D etroit w h ich em broidered and raffled o ff aprons w ith cla s sic U k rainian m o tifs, and k n it ted a fgh an s for p atien ts at a lo cal hospital. O f course, th ere are alw ays card p arties, recep tion s a t hom e, dances, p yroh y suppers, holiday celebration s, and th ea ter par ties. T he la st could be a dram atic play, th e ballet, opera, m usical com edy, concert or som e ou t stan d in g sp orts event. O f course, m ost o f th ese even ts m ay be u ti lized as fu n d -raisin g p rojects. A nd la st b u t n ot lea st, it is hoped th a t U N W L A m em bers, w h eth er as an organ ization, an “O khruzhna R ad a,” a branch or as ind ividu als, tak e p art in civic and com m u nity a ffa irs in th eir tow n s and cities and h ave a ffilia tion s w ith as m an y grou ps as p ossib le, includ ing p articip ation in local p olitical life. A nd w e m u st n ot fo rg et our ob ligation s to our oth er organ ization s, such as th e U k rain ian C ongress C om m ittee, th e Shevch en ko M em or ial F und, etc. T h ese are ju st som e su g g es tion s fo r p rogram s fo r th e n ew club year w h ich w e tr u st w ill be a rew ard in g and fru itfu l one for th e en tire S oyuz U k rain ok m em b ership. A lth ou gh th is issu e o f O UR L IF E m ay reach you a fter th e deadline for reg isterin g in your com m u nity, n everth eless w e w ould like to sa y a few w ords about votin g, w hich is th e civic d uty of each o f us w ho is eligible to cast a vote. W hen you vote, you exercise your rig h ts o f good citizen sh ip and p articip ate in your govern m en t b y ch oosin g th e b est can didates to rep resen t you. In order to vote, you m u st re gister, and to reg ister you m u st q u alify as to age (over 2 1 ), be a U n ited S ta tes citizen by b irth or n atu ralization , be a resid en t of your sta te, cou nty, city or vil lage and election d istrict for a sp ecified period o f tim e (depend in g on w h ere you live) and be able to prove- you can read and w rite in E n glish , if you are a n ew or fir st voter. O nce you h ave registered , you should inform y ou rself on th e issu es involved and stu d y th e b ackgrounds and q u alification s o f th e can d id ates. T hen you can follow th e cam paigns and w eigh th e view s and sta tem en ts o f th e can d idates in th e n ew spapers, on telev isio n or radio or b y atten d in g p olitical m eetin gs, d iscussion groups, etc. T h is year o f 1962 is an im por ta n t election year, as th e voters w ill choose 37 U . S. S en ators, 36 G overnors, th e en tire H ouse of R ep resen tatives and hundreds of M ayors and oth er local and sta te o fficia ls. T h erefore, be an in form ed voter and vote for, and in flu en ce oth ers to vo te for, hon e st and capable officia ls. L et us alw ays rem em ber th a t vo tin g b y secret b allot in free election s is one o f th e g rea test p rivileges o f A m erican citizen ship, a p rivilege w h ich is denied to m illion s o f people elsew h ere in th e w orld and esp ecially to th o se under C om m unist dom ina tion w h ich include our en slaved U krain ian brethren.
