M arie A n to in ette’s h aird resser w ould h ave been green w ith envy. A nd m inks galore. It w as h eartw arm in g to see m an y of th e form er m em bers, w ho m arried and m oved aw ay from P h ila., in fu ll attendance. A m on g th em M rs. In h er report of ac tiv ities o f th e 25 years M rs. W o chok underscored th e d iligen ce o f M rs. O lga R ij L isovitch , P res ident, w ho served fo r th e p ast seven years in th a t cap acity. Senior B ran ches of U N W L A o f P h ilad elp hia w ere am ply rep resen ted at th e B anquet. M any of th em w ere m oth ers of th e Junior L eagu ers. D an cin g to th e strain of a good orch estra lasted to alm ost th e w ee hours of th e m orning. N ovem ber 16th m arked an oth er happy occasion for th e Junior L eagu ers, w h en th eir P resid en t M rs. O lga L isovitch w as aw arded a plaque o f 1962 b y th e Good N eigh b ors C enter of P hilad elp hia at th e B anquet, for th e m ost d iligen t w ork in h er C hapter. On N ovem ber 29th th e P h ila delphia F ed eration of W om en’s C lubs gave th e fir st prize to U k rain ian Junior L eagu e for th e b est intern ation al doll en try — a U k rain ian doll, m ade b y A nn Y arem ko, and 3rd prize for a toy L ike a star, obscured for a tim e in its orbit, by th e unhappy trend of hum an even ts, th e d eath of C onstance M alitska, a teach er and w riter is for th e fir st tim e b ein g observed, in re m em brance of her b y U k rain ian w om en’s organ ization s. In troubled d ays she died in L viv, U k rain e, at th e age of 72, lonely and forg o tten alth ou gh h er con trib u tion to U k rain ian culture w as varied and fin e. C onstance M alitsk a started to w rite at th e tu rn of th e cen tu ry. H er m ain in terest w as children and th eir en vironm ent. F irst sh e w rote for th em fa iry tales, stories and p oetry. U n der th e literary nam e of V ira L e- b edova sh e w as w ell know n to sm all readers. L ater sh e w rote sh ort stories for ad ults b ut her top ic w as children and th eir problem s. S he w as also an able jo u rn a list; and her articles on cu rren t topics w ere popular. A lth ou gh M alitsk a’s w ritin gs b rou gh t h er a w ide audience, h er im p ortan ce for U k rain ian w om en is o f an oth er kind. She w as also in terested in social w ork. S im u ltan eou sly w ith th e b egin- (stu ffed p u ssy ), m ade b y O lga L isovitch . A n oth er happy occasion for Junior L eagu ers w as th e elec tion o f M rs. S tep h anie W ochok as m em ber of th e B oard of P h ila delphia F ed eration of W om en’s Clubs. M rs. W ochok w ill serve as chairm an of th e C itizenship and Im m igration C om m ittee. T hese are only a few glim p ses of th e Junior L eagu e activ ities. T hey m eet every m on th at th e U N W L A B uilding, serve tea w ith hom e m ade goodies p re pared by th eir m em bers, and plan and w ork and w ork and plan som e m ore. T h ey are happ y to geth er and often com pare pho tos of th eir fam ilies th a t are still grow in g and grow in g and grow ing. Good luck in th e com ing year and m ay su ccess follow you w h erever you go. N an a. n in g of her w ritin g, sh e also helped to organize a central w om en ’s organization, th e Z hi- n ocha H rom ada in L viv and su c ceeded in estab lish in g branches of it all over th e coun try. S h e w as a talen ted speaker and could easily sw ay h er audience. T hanks to her in itiative, U k rain ian w om en raised a volu n tary fund, before W orld W ar I th a t organized th e U k rain ian L egion (U k rain sk i Sichovi S trilci). H er lead in g p osition in th e U k rain ian com m unity caused h er p ersecu tions. W hen th e R u ssian arm y in 1914 occupied L viv, and U k rain ian leaders w ere arrested, sh e w as th e only w om an am on g th em . T hey w ere all deported to Siberia, and th ere sp en t fiv e years, in th is fa r and gloom y country. A fter her return, in 1920, sh e d evoted h er life to schoolw ork. S he w rote again fo r children. A nd h er articles w ere as popular as before. B ut, in social life, sh e w as no m ore active th an p revi ou sly. H ow ever, sh e supported every im p ortan t action o f th e U k rain ian w om en, w ith h er nam e and au th ority.
