Our Christmas Programs O nce again w e are in th e m i d st o f th e joyou s and h oly sea son o f C hristm as w h ich to us “S oyu zan k y” esp ecially should be th e occasion for a renew al of sp iritual valu es and a stren g th en in g o f love for our unique U k rain ian cu stom s and trad i tion s. M any of th e U N W L A branch es w ill hold th e i r annual C h rist m as supper or “S viata V ech era,” servin g th e tradition al C h rist m as d ish es of k u tia, borshch, cabbage soup, fish , varenn iki, p irohy, h olu b tsi, m ushroom s, etc. A s in th e p ast, th e m em bers w ill in vite m any of th eir A m er ican and oth er non-U krainian frien d s to sh are th ese suppers, a t w h ich our b eau tifu l U k rain ian k oliad y and sh ch ed rivk y w ill be su ng, or perhaps a p lay or a tab leau w ill be p resented . M em bers o f oth er b ranches m ay v isit th e h om es o f frien d s and relatives, sin g in g k oliady for th e b en efit of w orth y cau ses. S till oth ers w ill hold C h rist m as p arties to w h ich th e h u s bands and children o f th e U N W L A m em b ers w ill be invited . C aroling, a program b y th e ch il dren, a grab b ag and refresh m en ts w ill p ut all in a fe stiv e sp irit and it is hoped w ill create a closer bond am ong th e m em bers. A n oth er effec tiv e ty p e of pro gram is to h ave a U N W L A m em ber, p referab ly attired in a U k rain ian costum e, address an A m erican group in h er com m u n ity on th e su b ject o f U k rainian C hristm as trad ition s. U k rainian folk art ob jects could also be d is played and p erh ap s U k rain ian food could be served. In cidentally, it is hoped th a t m any o f our A m erican-born m em bers w ill learn th e U k rain ian culinary arts, esp ecially th e C hristm as and oth er sp ecial h oli day d ish es. T hus th ey w ill be afford ed an oth er opportu nity to p rop agate our ch erish ed U k rain ian trad ition s am ong th eir A m erican frien d s and at th e sam e tim e p erp etuate th em am ong our ow n people. O f course th ere are m any oth er ty p es of p rogram s w h ich U N W L A m em b ers can p resen t. W e are only m en tion in g a few to illu strate th eir organ ization al value in b in d ing p resen t m em bers and in ind u cin g new ones to en ter our ranks. So let u s celebrate th e b irth of th e C h rist child n ot only w ith m errym ak in g and th e exch an ge o f cards and g ifts, b u t let us ob serve our centuries-old U k rain ian C h ristm as cu stom s w h ich our en em ies h ave n ever succeeded in d estroyin g. A lso, let us re m em ber in our p rayers th ose U k rain ian s w ho cannot openly observe th is b lessed season .
