The H air Do and th e W reath A g irl’s h a ir in U kraine i s usually divided in th e middle of th e head and sm oothly combed back. If it is long enough, you could m ake a braid. If it is short, g a th e r it in a t th e neck. The g irl’s head is adorned. The sim pler w ay is a red or green ribbon around th e head, w ith tw o sm all flow ers on both sides. The rich er w ay — a sm all w reath. Flow ers for th e w reath — daisies, poppy seeds, corn flow ers, as th ey grow in th e fields of U kraine. In case these flow ers are not available, use roses and violets, b u t of sm all size. The w reath is trim m ed by a few ribbons on th e back. Choose d iffe ren t colors, red, blue, green and yellow (but never pink or violet). The ribbon m u st reach th e child’s hip. In case th e girl is not using a w reath b u t a ribbon w ith flow ers, th e hanging ribbons are a t tached to h er beads. BEW A RE O F: A hair-do w ith bushy curls, w hich do not m atch w ith th e ribbon or w reath. A big w reath w ith large flow ers is not used in U krainian cos tum e. Ribbons in lig h t shades of red or blue w hich do not m atch th e costum e’s vivid colors. B eads (N am ysto) A sm all girl cannot w ear th e rich “nam ysto” of th e grow n up. H e r’s are th re e row s of red or yellow beads, im itatin g th e beads of corals or am ber. B EW A RE O F: M any row s of glossy m ulticolored beads, w hich are too heavy fo r a sm all g irl’s neck.
