Our Convention Ukrainian Folk Art Exhibit The X III Convention of th e U krain i an N ational W om en’s League will g a th e r delegates from all UNW LA B ranches. Re presented will be th e women-pio- neers, who founded our organiza tion 37 years ago, th e newcom ers, who filled up h er ran k s a f t e r W orld W ar II and th e A m eri can-born women of U krainian descent, who are th e link w ith th e A m erican world. The Convention will be a su r vey of th e ir work. These th ree kinds of m em bers are p u ttin g th e ir best effo rts into th e ir or ganization. Som etim es th e ir en deavor is not co-ordinated. B ut th e ir devotion to th e cause b rings th em alw ays good results. O ur achievem ents in th e last th ree years te stify to th is. The m onum ent of L esya U krainka in th e C ultural G arden of Cleve land, Ohio is th e b est proof of our activity. The C om m ittee of seven UNW LA m em bers guided th is p ro ject during six long years (1955-1962) and accomp lished it, backed by th e resourc es of th e Ohio region. The exhi b its of U krainian folk a rt popu larized th e E a ste r egg “pysan- k a ” as a pure U krainian a rt pro duct. The “M other and Child” program , caring for U krainian children in G erm any and A us tria was continued w ith g re at zeal, and reached 16 schools and k in d erg arten s caring fo r about 300 children. The sam e wise, w arm understanding left a help ing hand to old, lonely women in Europe. T w enty of th em are re ceiving each m onth a sm all am ount. The educational ta sk of U krainian m others is stre n g th ened th ro u g h p aren t sem inars and D ay C enters fo r children. H ow ever we have deficiencies. The increase of our m em bers is not as we expected it. O ur wel fa re program does not m eet all needs of our com m unity. Our ed ucational directions do not reach th e young m others fo r whom th ey are intended. M any o ther problem s have to be faced a t our Convention. L e t’s look a t it. A nd especial- The exhibit of U krainian folk a rt and pysanky, sponsored by New Y ork B ranch 72 of “Soyuz U krainok,” a t th e huge Brook lyn Public L ib rary m ain branch which opened on A pril 20th and continued th ro u g h M ay 23, was received w ith g re a t in tere st by th e public, rep o rts M rs. M ary D ushnyck, president of B ranch 72. Miss Leonore B raun of th e L ib rary s ta ff stated th a t she had m any favorable com m ents about th e display, and view ers called it “th e p re ttie st ex h ib it” th e L ib rary has had to date. The exhibit consisted of nine gallery windows, filled w ith U krainian em broidery, ceram ics, wood carvings, pysanky, m etal crosses, etc. On th e m ain floor of th e L ib rary tw o U krainian wooden crosses w ere displaced, one of th em being th e inlaid Hil ly a t those A m erican-born m em bers, eager to pour th e ir ideas and plans into w ork. W e are th e edge of tw o w orlds in our organi- zaiton, and could be th e link be tw een them . A press release concerning th e exhibit was sent out to papers in th e local area from th e office of M rs. E leanor V reeland, D irector of Public R elations a t th e Brook lyn Public L ibrary. Some of th e papers w hich carried it з . s about th e exhibit w ere th e New Y ork Sunday N ew s (B rooklyn section), th e N. Y. S unday M ir ror, Cue m agazine, and th e N Y. W orld-Telegram and Sun w hich carried tw o item s — one of them a large З-column picture of lo , e- ly A nna Rohoza, 7, dressed i n a U krainian costum e and holding a U krainian doll (from th e “Cen- tra lia ” m useum ), and cap tijn ed “U krainian Dolls.” The Brooklyn C hron i cle and th e F latb u sh Life of B rooklyn also m entioned U k rain ian exhibit articles. Because M rs. D ushnyck Ь • 1 arranged a U krainian exhibit fo r th e C hildren’s D epartm ent of th e B rooklyn Public L ib rary fo u r years ago, she w as asked to organize th is exhibit, and she was in stru m en tal in assem bling th e beautiful pysanky and o th er articles from m any U krainian collections.
