A Meeting With Mme. Gokdogan During the Study Days of the World Movement of Mothers (M.M.M.) in June 1958 in Paris, France, the Turkish women were represented by Mme. Nuzket Gokdogan, a prominent astrono mer and lecturer at the Univer sity of Istanbul, Turkey. Wishing to learn more about the life and work of women in Mrs. Nuzget Gokdogapi, Professor of Astronom y at the University of Istan bul, Turkey. Turkey, our representative Mrs. Luba Witoshynska called on Mme. Gokdogan at her daughter’s house on Avenue du Main, in Paris. Mme.. Gokdogan has many ties that link her with France, for here she studied astronomy at Lions and Paris. She is married to a pro fessor of architecture at Istanbul, and is a mother of two children. Very graciously Mrs. Gokdogan supplied us with information about women’s organized life in Turkey. At the present the stron gest and most numerous in mem bership are the Women’s Union in Istanbul, the Women’s Auxili ary Organization, and the Society of Women University Graduates of which Mrs. Gokdogan is a board member. The MMM has as yet no roots in the country and it will be Mrs. Gokdogan’s chief responsibility to take the first step in forming such a branch. The women of Turkey won their equality only recently, but already in this short span of time they have won, as did their Euro pean sisters, the rights of educa tion, work, and politics. An ex ample of the latter is the fact that women occupy 8 seats in the Parliament (7 delegates from the Democratic party and 1 Repub lican). The number has doubled since last year’s elections. Further talk touched on the present political situation. We learned that Turkish women take an acute interest in their coun try’s politics; for example, both Turkey’s geographical nearness to USSR and the recent crisis in Cypress are a source of debate and grave concern. Thus having exchanged views and gathered opinions, our representative left the apartment of her hostess with many memorable impressions of this interview. EASTER CUSTOMS In the last issue we commented on the “paska” — baking contest in Detroit. As a result we are now receiving news about Ukrainian Easter egg exhibits in various ci ties. Such a demonstration was conducted by the Homemakers Club in Elizabeth, N. J., at the local IWCA auditorium. The ex hibit, which drew some 80 guests, was opened by the head of the 24th Branch, Mrs. Maria Procak, while Mrs.. Kinashczuk demon strated the art of Easter egg painting. A similar exhibition was con ducted by Branch 5 7 at the Mun son-Williams-Proctor Institute. Here this Easter egg demonstra tion by Mrs. Maria Sawycka was part of a Ukrainian art exhibit. Also Branch 71 in Jersey City, O U R LIFE Edited by Editorial Board Published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America» Inc. 909 N. Franklin St. Philadelphia 23, Pa.. Phone MA 7-7945 N. J., acquainted Americans with our Easter eggs at an exhibition of Ukrainian folk art at the local museum. The demonstration was conducted by Mrs. Olha Hryeay, head of Branch 67 in Perth Am boy. The Ukrainian Easter eggs were popularized in a new man ner on a program over the “Wan- derama” show of WINEW-TV. The exhibit, sponsored by the Daughters Oif Ukraine, the Eliza beth UNWLA Branch, presented thirteen children who w ere seen decorating Easter eggs in the Ukrainian style.
