"M O T H E R A N D C H IL D F U N D ” H E L P S G R A N N IE S F o r the last five years “M other and Child Fund” created 'by the U krainian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica, Inc., has helped the U krainian -children of the H ard Core D P ’s by form ing kindergartens and nurseries ift various cities of G erm any and A u stria. The necessary funds are collected m onthly by U'NW LA branches which assum ed an obli gation to care for one of the es tablished centers. T here are m ore than 400 children in G erm any and A ustria encom passed by this ac tion. Several m onths ago UNW LA decided to help the aged women who are alone, left in unfriendly surroundings w ithout care and financial assistance. Some of them are in hospitals suffering from incurable diseases, in need of m aterial help. Some of the U N W LA Branches responded to this care for help and are already sending them packages w ith food, clothing and a few dollars m onthly. W e hope th a t more Branches will join this call to help ‘'G rannies” who w ere once active in civic and social w ork and are now totally depen dent upon help from people of good will. L etters from those receiving such help are expressing deep g ra titude for understanding, help and moral support. Contributions to M other and Child fund “for G rannies” will be gratefully acknowledged. U K R A IN IA N F O L K C O S T U M E There are several U krainian folk costum es which com e origin ally from different parts of U k raine. They are w orn here on dif ferent occasions, like concerts, folk dances, parades, and m ani festation's. M ore often we- see folk costum es from Poltava re gion, because its em broidery is very colorful, its style simple, and it is relatively easy to make. Sometimes, how ever, through carelessness, im proper .choice of colors and styles are put together and such folk costum e loses m uch of its original beauty. For those interested in avoiding such m istakes, K. A ntonow ych The folk costum e of P oltava region is considered a representative U krainian n ational costum e. w rote a book “U krainian folk cos tum e from Poltava,” in w hich the author gives specific instructions and supplem ents them w ith sketches. Also in Svoboda, U k rainian W eekly, a detailed de scription of U krainian folk cos tum es was published in th e E n g lish language. A N E W P R E S I D E N T O F U C W L IN C A N A D A Dr. Stephania Potosky of Y orkton, Sask., was elected P re sident of the League of U krain ian Catholic W om en in Canada at their convention in T oronto. She was born in W innipeg, but became a perm anent resident of the Saskatchew an 'Province. She attended the U niversity in W in nipeg, Man., and in 1946 received her degree of D octor of M edi cine. She opened Her office to gether w ith her husband, in Y ork ton, Sask. Beside her medical career she was also interested in civic a f fairs. In 1954 Dr. Stephania P o tosky was a candidate to the City Council in Y orkton and w as elect ed w ith a great m ajority of votes. For tw o years she was an active m em ber of the City Council and gained full support and respect of her fellow citizens. As President of U CW L Dr. Stephania Potosky will m ost c e r tainly contribute' to th e grow th and strength of this organization. P R E S I D E N T O F W F U W O IN P H IL A D E L P H IA M rs. O'lena Salisnyak, P resi dent of W orld Federation of U k rainian W om en’s O rganizations, spent a few weeks in the U nited States w here she conferred w ith the executives of the U krainian N ational W om en’s L eague of Am erica and m em bers of the W FU W O about preparations for a W orld Congress of U krainian Women- to be held in N ew Y ork in M ay 1959. D uring her visit a few com m ittees w ere form ed and plans for their future w ork w ere adopted. On this occasion M rs. Olena Salisnyak visited different nation al organizations and religious and cultural institutions. D rain well. In another saucepan, cook the apples and w ater. Combine w ith the drained cab bage. Blend the sour cream and flour and add to the cabbage and apple m ixture. Season to taste.
