UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN At the Convention of the General Federation of Women's Clubs The 67th A nnual Convention of the General Federation of W om en’s Clubs was held in D etroit on June 2nd through Ju ne 6th, 1958, at the H enry and Edsel Ford A u ditorium . The convention: was a t tended by som e 3,500 delegates from the 48 states of the Union plus the territo rial possessions and International Clubs through out the world. The them e of the convention was “K now ledge is Pow er.” This them e was evident in the program and the speeches of the conven tion. The training of leaders ac complished in classes held daily at 7 :45 prior to the 9:00 o’clock sessions yielding expertness thru special leadership training in p ar liam entary procedure, w-as strongly em phasized. W hile the speakers laid stress on the m ighty force of influence wielded by o r ganized wom en ranging from po litics to physical culture. In the resolutions of the convention it was resolved to carry out the them e fully through the club year by means of training, education, scholarships, etc. M rs. A. V olker w as the only de legate to the convention from the U krainian N ational W om en’s League. H aving attended tw o days of the convention, she com m ents in her report on a few of th e observations she made of the convention w hich have im pressed her the m ost. The prim ary reason of adm iration w as the efficiency w ith which the convention was planned and carried out. Plans were executed and carried out alm ost to the letter and schedules w ere adhered to w ith discipline likes of which are unbelievable for women. R esolutions w ere p re sented in advance, studied, and passed w ith trem endous speed. A trem endous am ount o>f field w ork is being done by the GF. The V ice-president visited 46 out of 48 states in the past year. This has resulted in an increase of m em bership th e proof o'f wihich is the rapid m ushroom ing of J u nior Clubs and International Clubs. A t the convention these clubs held their own sessions, p a nel discussions, buzz sessions to increase officer and m em ber par ticipation .planned program s all of which w ere well im plem ented. The GF places strong em phasis on a good program ,as a good pro gram is the lifeblood of the o r ganization. The program is planned a year in advance and is carried through by several depart m ents of the GF. F or example, during the course of the past tw o years a new departm ent was cre ated, “Study of G reat Religions of the W orld.” This them e was incorporated as part of the an nual program for the Club’s year. This enabled the m em bers to learn som ething of th e very interesting topic, while treatin g their own be liefs a private affair and not m ix ing Federation w ork w ith the Church of their choice. T he treasu re’s report w as printed in a separate brochure and showed the entire scope of the F ederation’s operations. A fter raising dues they expected a sharp drop in m em bership. H ow ever, by increasing interests in education al projects, membership' drives, and good program s they have gained m em bers and are now operating in black. The atm osphere of the conven tion was deeply spiritual, reflect ing the effects of leadership be hind it. As M rs. Prout, one of the officers, put i t : “W here th e Spirit of God is, liberty is there too.” Each m em ber feels a stro n g re sponsibility to its organizations o r club whose strength rests on the faith of women in each other. Service is the basis of w om en’s w ork who live by th e ir convic tions th at right is m ight. These wom en are builders of good will not by speeches as governm ent em bassadors but as m ost pow er ful good will agents w ith their vital people to people contact via International Clus. T hey live and serve hum anity not in “the live and let live” attitude b u t rath er the live and help live and th e a tti tude of “I’ll look up, I ’ll love and laugh and lift.” Note: W e are happy to give our readers the synopsis of Mrs. Ana stasia Volker s lengthy report on General Federation of W om ens Club’s convention which she at tended as the representative of U k rainian National W om ens League of America, Inc., an associated member of said General Federa tion in Washington, D . C. IRISH WOMEN PRAY FOR TH EIR SISTERS F or m any years the Catholic w om en of Ireland had to struggle to defend their faith.
