UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN Votes of Women Tihe American women who had to -carry on long struggle for their right to vote, as well as to be elected, and won this -equality with men in 1919, shall on this coming November 6 vote again in Federal election, for President, Vice-President and for Congress men. One may contend that the situ ation in our country did not change since 1919. True, there have already been some women Senators and' Representatives, yet their negligible number could have no weight in deciding the im portant problems of the na tion. No doulbt, the women are not satisfied with this state of affairs for they did not struggle for the mere principle but likewise for “translating” the words into deeds. However, they are not helpless. On the -contrary, they are aware o-f their organizational and potential strength, and they are following eagerly the prog ress of events at home and abroad, ever ready to act intelli gently. Even if the women vote for men, they are resolving upon their attitude tow ard im portant domestic and foreign problems of the nation. All candidates, from those running for President down to the local contestants, are bound to reckon with the voice of womanhood. Normally the women are more •conservative than the men. This is only natural since the m other who brought up, or is bringing up her children, has to consider their future and the immediate pros pects of the family. And as the fortune of the family is generally the reflection of the nation’s lot, she must take keen interest in all that is happening at home and throughout the world. Thus, first of all, tlhe American woman is against any risky or dangerous policy because else she would be risking all attainm ents of her own family, of her children, and children's children. Consequently, she is, as a rule, more opposed to war than is the man in spite of the fact that he is the one to bear arms and do the fighting at the front. The Europeans have been ac customed to multiplying th eir po litical parties. But this trend tends to shatter the stam ina of a nation, and thus to suffer the de feat before ever being over whelmed by an enemy. This irre futable truth has always been perceived by the American people which has happily stuck to two- party system and in this manner has been able to build its insur mountable world power. Inciden tally, it ought to be noted right here and mosit em phatically that a one-part}' system, like Nazi or Bolshevik method, which was, or is, imposed and controlled by the usurping dictators, has nothing in common w ith the tw o-party system, and, of course, is much worse than even the system of multiple parties. The American women are equal ly in both m ajor parties where they usually perform the task o-f stabilizing or restraining force. Certainly, they have always been against the wrar, and more decidedly so- since they realized that it was the w ar that built up the unprecedented strength of Russian bolsheviki, who, in turn, have imposed upon America and the rest of the Free W orld the cold w ar that has cost the A m er ican D e o p l e , up till now, hundreds of billions of dollars and th rea t ens to blaze up a new world war. Doubtlessly, the American w o men will use their votes this com ing November w ith consideration to determine the future course of the nation in domestic as well as in the world policies. They are closely w atching the m arch of events and will surely m ake their voice felt. CONGRESS OF UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF CANADA Early in July there was held in W innipeg, M anitoba, the con gress of the Ukrainian Catholic W omen’s League of Canada (UCW'L), an organization with subdivisions throughout Canada. On the agenda of the confer ence w e re: organizational ques tions, bylaws, and the problem of creating o>f publishing fund. The UCW'L is calling in its res olutions on Ukrainian families, especially upon m others, to make more profound the religious life and the upbringing of children in accordance w ith religious princi ples. Mrs. Catherine Crouse, a well- known patriotic w orker of long standing in E astern Canada, was elected president of the League.
